Shower wall tile being installed doesn’t look flat, can this be fixed?

My contractor is in midprocess of building a new shower. He keeps telling me the tile wIll look better when it is completed, but I am not so sure. The floor doesn’t totally drain and the wall tiles don’t seem to be flat to the same plane. HELP, should I fire him, or let him finish?

How your tiles should look depends somewhat on what type they are. Some are designed to have a rustic, rather uneven look. But with the majority of tiles, the surface of each tile should be in almost exactly the same plane as adjacent tiles. This will result in smooth grout joints and prevents the tile edges from being exposed to damage—an edge that sticks above the others can be chipped and the surrounding grout joint will be an uneven thickness (the unglazed edge of the tile will also look different than the surface).

You should certainly stop him now and express your concerns. A good tilesetter will be able to explain why he’s doing what he’s doing. It might be useful to get a second opinion, but another tilesetter would probably be loathe to criticize the work of another. If your tilesetter can’t adequately explain his work, I’d try to get a general contractor in, or maybe a home inspector, or anyone who has had some experience installing tile. Depending on where you live, you might also get some advice from local contractor licensing board.

If the work is not being done properly, the less tile installed now the better, if the work will have to be removed and reinstalled.
