Victorian Heart

VICTORIAN BUSHFIRES 2009!?
My heart goes out to anyone dealing with the fires at the moment from Saturday 7th, in Victoria Aus. it breaks my heart to see the suffer our country’s going thru.
If anyone has a story to tell about our current tragedy, I’d like to hear it.
I lost my farm house in taggerty, my favourite place in the world that i’ve been going to since i was a baby.. gone.
Marysville was wiped out in 12 minutes! The death toll is currently at 180 approx.
I’m just lucky i still have my family and friends, while there are people out there who have lost everything
I know some people who I’m pretty sure lost their house in Taggerty.
In Marysville we heard of someone who was missing last weekend when the fires had gone through and we contacted a radio station with info on the missing person. Upon talking to his relatives we thought he had gone back to his house. Two days later we got a call to say he had been found safe and well. These people were total strangers but we worried ourselves sick about them. It was a huge relief to hear some good news.
I spend alot of time up in Marysville and Murrindindi doing photography and I don’t even know if I can go back there in the near future. I don’t even want to think about all the wildlife that’s been lost in the Murrindindi park. It was so beautiful. We had picnics at the top of the waterfall there.
It still hasn’t sunk in, the whole devasation of what happened, the lives lost and what’s left, or not.
I am really worried now for the Dandenong Ranges which is about 5 minutes drive from my house. We had a small fire there in Ferntree Gully last weekend but it was contained fairly quickly thank God. A firefighter lost his life at home from the Upper Gully brigade and the station is shut down in mourning I believe. It is being said that it was arson but not proven yet. If it was an arsonist and the station there is closed then it’s a perfect opportunity for the arsonist to take advantage of that and start some fires in the Ranges this weekend.
I am crossing my fingers that everything will be okay and we are all on guard.
If the Ranges go up like the fires last weekend then I don’t even want to think about what people are going to do. So many live up there.
I remember Ash Wednesday and my entire house was rained on with burning embers. The swimming pool was black with ash. It was unbelievable.
God help us all for the rest of the summer.

Victorian Poetry and the Culture of the Heart $110 This study considers why and how the heart became a vital image in Victorian poetry. It argues that the intense focus on heart imagery in the period highlights anxieties about the ability of poetry to act upon its readers. It covers key poems by authors such as Tennyson and the Brownings, and contextualizes them with reference to lesser-known works. – ;Victorian Poetry and the Culture of the Heart is a significant and timely study of nineteenth-century poetry and poetics. It considers why and how the heart became a vital image in Victorian poetry, and argues that the intense focus on heart imagery in many major Victorian poems highlights anxieties in this period about the ability of poetry to act upon its readers. In the course of the nineteenth century, this study argues, increased doubt about the validity of feeling led. to the depiction of the literary heart as alienated, distant, outside the control of mind and will. This coincided with a notable rise in medical literature specifically concerned with the pathological heart, and with the development of new techniques and instruments of investigation such as the stethoscope. As poets feared for the health of their own hearts, their poetry embodies concerns about a widespread culture of heartsickness in both form and content. In addition, concerns about the heart's status and actions reflect upon questions of religious faith and doubt, and feed into issues of gender and nationalism. This book argues that it is vital to understand how this wider culture of the heart informed poetry and was in turn influenced by poetic constructs. Individual chapters on Barrett. Browning, Arnold, and Tennyson explore the vital presence of the heart in major works by these poets – including Aurora Leigh, 'Empedocles on Etna', In Memoriam, and Maud – while the wide-ranging opening chapters present an argument for the mutual influence of poetry and physiology in the period and trace. the development of new theories of rhythm as organic and affective. – ;The great strength of this book lies in Blair's analyses of these rhythms …this is a fine book – Angela Leighton, The Tennyson Research Bulletin;Blair uses her scrupulous research on Victorian cardiology to good effect and her subtle and nuanced arguments make this an intellectually persuasive and thought-provoking book. – Catherine Maxwell Womens: a cultural review; The need to consider the heart as a literal and symbolic element of Victorian poetry has been neglected; this book begins to redress this disregard in a fresh and exciting way, suggesting that there is more to the heart than just its beat. – Amanda Mordavsky, The British Society for Literature and Science;…beautifully inflected and original study…a book which offers an eloquent new perspective on this fascinating topic, and should become required reading for all interested in the study of Victorian poetic practice. – Roger Ebbatson, British Association of Victorian Studies;…va |

Victorian Literature and Finance $99 This book analyses relationships between writing and the financial structures of the 19th century. What emerges is a remarkable set of imaginative connections between literature and Victorian finance, including women and the culture of investment, the profits of a media age, and the uncomfortable relationship between literary and financial capital. – ;Victorian Britain offered to the globe an economic structure of unique complexity. The trading nation, at the heart of a great empire, developed the practices of advanced capitalism – currency, banking, investment, money markets, business practices and theory, intellectual property legislation – from which the financial systems of the contemporary world emerged. Cultural forms in Victorian Britain transacted with high capitalism in a variety of ways but literary critics interested. in economics have traditionally been preoccupied either with writers' hostility to industrial capitalism in terms of its shaping of class, or with the development of consumerism. Victorian Literature and Finance is the first extended study to take seriously the relationships between literary forms and. those more complex discourses of Victorian high finance. These essays move beyond the examination of literature that was merely impatient with the perceived consequences of capitalism to analyse creative relationships between culture and economic structures. Considering such topics as the nature of currency, women and the culture of investment, the profits of a modern media age, the dramatization of risk on the Victorian stage, the practice of realism in relation to business theory, the culture. of speculation at the end of the century, and arguments about the uncomfortable relationship between literary and financial capital, Victorian Literature and Finance sets new terms for understanding and theorizing the relationship between high finance and literary writing in the nineteenth. century. – ;Victorian Literature and Finance offers a rich sampling of new work in this vitally important area of Victorian Studies. – Daniel Vivona, The Review of English Studies |

Fred Dibnah’s Victorian Heroes $22.59
Fred Dibnah was a man born out of his time. His era should have been the ‘magnificent age of British engineering’ – the nineteenth century – and his heroes were the great industrial engineers of the period whose prolific innovations and dedicated work ethic inspired a national mood of optimism and captured the hearts of the British public.

Fred Dibnah’s Victorian Heroes tells the stories of some of these men – including George and Robert Stephenson, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Joseph Whitworth – and why they were such inspirational figures to Fred. What were their backgrounds? Where did their drive and vision come from? What sort of people were they at work and at home? And what was their contribution to the history of industry and engineering?

Most of them – like Fred – were colourful, larger-than-life characters for whom no challenge was too great. Taking these fascinating characters as inspiration, Fred Dibnah’s Victorian Heroes gets to the very heart of what allowed nineteenth-century Britannia to rule the waves . . .
|

The Evolutionary Imagination in Late-Victorian Novels $99.95 Dominated by Darwinism and its numerous guises, evolutionary theory presented opportunities and difficulties for late Victorian novelists. John Glendening shows how a range of texts, from The Island of Doctor Moreau and Dracula to Heart of Darkness, address the interrelationship between order and chaos uncovered by evolutionary thinking. His focus is on how these authors stressed, not objective truths, but rather the contingencies and confusions generated by theories of evolution. |

Searching the Heart $38 In January 1862, Charles Godwin courted Harriet Russell, ultimately unsuccessfully, with the following lines: “Like cadences of inexpressibly sweet music, your kind words came to me: causing every nerve to vibrate as though electrified by some far off strain of heavenly harmony.” Almost ten years later, Albert Janin, upon receiving a letter from his beloved Violet Blair, responded with, “I kissed your letter over and over again, regardless of the small-pox epidemic at New York, and gave myself up to a carnival of bliss before breaking the envelope.” And in October 1883, Dorothea Lummis wrote candidly to her husband Charles, “I like you to want me, dear, and if I were only with you, I would embrace more than the back of your neck, be sure.” In Karen Lystra’s richly provocative book, Searching the Heart, we hear the voices of Charles, Albert, Dorothea, and nearly one hundred other nineteenth-century Americans emerge from their surprisingly open, intimate, and emotional love letters. While historians of nineteenth-century America have explored a host of private topics, including courtship, marriage, birth control, sexuality, and sex roles, they have consistently neglected the study of romantic love. Lystra fills this gap by describing in vivid detail what it meant to fall in love in Victorian America. Based on a vast array of love letters, the book reveals the existence of a real openness–even playfulness–between male and female lovers which challenges and expands more traditional views of middle-class private life in Victorian America. Lystra refutes the common belief that Victorian men and women held passionlessness as an ideal in their romantic relationships. Enabling us to enter the hidden world of Victorian lovers, the letters they left behind offer genuine proof of the intensity of their most private interactions, feelings, behaviors, and judgments. Lystra discusses how Victorians anthropomorphized love letters, treating them as actual visits from their lovers, insisting on reading them in seclusion, sometimes kissing them (as Albert does with Violet’s), and even taking them to bed. She also explores how courtship rituals–which included the setting and passing of tests of love–succeeded in building unique, emotional bonds between lovers, and how middle-class views of romantic love, which encouraged sharing knowledge and intimacy, gave women more power in the home. Through the medium of love letters, Searching the Heart allows us to enter, unnoticed, the Victorian bedroom and parlor. We will leave with a different view of middle-class Victorian America. |

142 Strand: A Radical Address in Victorian London $15.59
142 Strand was the home of the brilliant, unconventional young publisher John Chapman. All the daring and avant-garde writers and thinkers of Victorian London gathered here, among them Thomas Carlyle, Dickens, Thackeray, John Stuart Mill, Herbert Spencer, and the scientist Thomas Henry Huxley (Darwin’s ‘bulldog’), as well as visiting Americans like Emerson, refugees from revolutionary Europe like Mazzini, and radical feminists like Barbara Leigh Smith, later founder of Girton College, Cambridge. They contributed to Chapman’s campaigning Westminster Review and attended his lively evening parties. In 1851 Chapman brought Marian Evans – the future George Eliot – to London to edit the Review. Her arrival caused rows in the household, which included Chapman’s wife and also his mistress.

The Strand was packed with booksellers, magazine publishers, theatres, clubs, and quack doctors. Just behind lay the brothels of Covent Garden and the disreputable pornographers of Holywell Street, while Westminster and the Houses of Parliament were a short distance away. Chapman’s circle touched all these worlds, and the vivid story of these unconventional lives and unorthodox views – marvellously told by Rosemary Ashton – takes us to the heart of Victorian culture, uncovering its surprising energy, its doubts and arguments, and, above all, its passionate reforming spirit.
|

Victorian Investments $21.2 Victorian Investments explores the relationship between the financial system in Great Britain and other aspects of Victorian society and culture. Building on the special journal issue of Victorian Studies devoted to Victorian investments, this volume is the first to define an interdisciplinary field of study emerging in the space between Marxist critiques of capitalism and traditional histories of business and economics. The contributors demonstrate how phenomena such as the expansion of colonial and foreign markets, the broadening of the investor base through the advent of limited liability, and the rise of financial journalism gave rise to a “culture of investment” that affected Victorian Britons at every level of society and influenced every kind of cultural production. Drawing together work by prominent historians as well as literary and cultural critics, Victorian Investments both defines the methodologies and perspectives that characterize an existing body of scholarship and pushes that scholarship in new directions, demonstrating the signal role of economic developments in Victorian culture and society. |
