How can you tell the difference between a baby snapping turtle and a store bought baby turtle?

I found a baby turtle in a parking lot and I can’t tell if he’s a snapper or if someone just dumped the poor thing. He has yellow spots on his head and red stripes. His shell is flat. There was a river behind the parking lot so if he is a snapper I’ll just go put him back. I can’t tell if he has a “beak” or not because he hasn’t come out of his shell. Can turtles from a pet store survive in the wild?

To be on the safe side, you should try getting him out. Put some food just outside his shell and see if he comes out. Was he moving? People could just dump dead turtles out. Pet turtles CANNOT survive in the wild. They can’t because when captive, they’re fed, the will lose the instinct to hunt. If I were you, take it to a vet. Keep it if you can, turtles are great pets!
