What head/body support is best for my newborn’s car seat and stroller?

My son was born a week ago today and I cannot stand putting him in his car seat the way it is now. His head just slouches onto his chest and the same thing happens in his stroller no matter how reclined it is (he’s only 6lbs 2 ounces).

Where can I find a good head/body support to go in my car seat and stroller?

You are RIGHT. When his head slouches onto his chest it’s not good. It decreases the oxygen they are getting, they’ve proven that. That’s why they tell parents now to use the car seat for traveling in the car, make sure it’s at the approved newborn incline level (45degrees, most car seats have a level indicator) and don’t use the car seat anywhere else, including in strollers and especially if they’re sleeping.

For the stroller, avoid it until he’s at least 2-3 months old. They make strollers that lay completely flat, but since yours doesn’t you need to wait a few months if you can. At 2-3 months they breathe better (at 6 months the risks seem to go away.) Carry him or put him in a chest carrier until then.

For the car-seat, unfortunately any support system, unless it came with the car seat, is going to make it slightly less safe to put it in. So your best bet is to use the car seat when you’re traveling in the car, and not any other time. Don’t let him sleep in the car seat, don’t put it on shopping carts, take it out, use it as a seat, or in the stroller. Just use it when he’s traveling in the car and take him out when you get there.
