Three aspects of a tropical cyclone can cause property damage and loss of life: wind, rain, and storm surge. Which one of the following caused the greatest loss of life and property when Katrina struck the Gulf Coast?

Personally I’d pick poor management of the situation; but I don’t think that’s what they are looking for here.

The greatest loss of life was the end result of rain from flooding and a very failed system for evacuation and levee management in New Orleans. Some lives were lost outside of that city, but a majority were in N.O. For property damage the same is true. While there was extensive properly damage from wind and storm surge, a larger portion was done by the flooding of New Orleans (and the city remaining under water for some time…)

Outside of New Orleans I would guess wind did more damage. However, New Orleans is a major city and the damage done to life and property there is greater than most of the rest of the Gulf Coast.

And I-well, it is absurd to fancy myself alive without Miriam. She would rather not visit with me, and yet, be it for an hour or a month, I never halfway enjoy myself without her, away from home.
