What do you know about pocket diapers?

I just started Cloth Diapering my 2 year old, and am planning on using them on my son when he is born in May. I use prefolds, and am very happy with them! If I double them up, my daughter can even use them at night. My only problem is getting her pants on over the diapers! They just don’t fit! She is in 24 months, and If I put her in 3t, she wouldn’t be able to walk! I looked at Pocket diapers, but they are SOO expensive! Any advice from a Cloth Diapering mommy with a little more experience?

We use pocket diapers and definitely can sympathize with you on the cost. It can seem like a lot of money, however, if you are looking at a one-size pocket like the bumGenius (which we use and love) or Happy Heiny’s or Blueberrys, then you can use the diapers on both your daughter and your new son and they will last you for the next 3 years of diapering. The costs will work out in the end.

However, it is a big expense all at once. You could buy a few at a time and stock up.

I do have another suggestion though. You could continue using your pre-folds and make wool longies to wear over the pre-folds, which double as a cover and pants! They are expensive to buy, usually $40-$50 each. However, you can very cheaply make your own! Even if you don’t knit, you can recycle old sweaters into longies.
