MADE $15.18 Hip-hop veteran Scarface doesn’t evolve much or waiver from his usual hardcore, minimal sound on his 2007 effort MADE, but that doesn’t mean his loyal fan base shouldn’t eat it up for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. MADE is Scarface doing everything right, delivering those cold, hardcore rhymes over uncomplicated, soulful beats. He’s inspired enough to carry this almost guest-free album on his own, and if anything’s changed about his lyrics, it’s that he’s more willing than ever to show his maturity. On the highlight “Big Dog Status” he tells the younger generation to stop worrying about the price tag of their ride and start thinking about what it takes to stay in the game for life. “Boy Meets Girl” is an insightful story of a hood relationship gone wrong while the bleak “The Suicide Note” wonders how Face’s old neighborhood slipped into hell so fast. M.A.D.E. $11.14 Despite his longtime association with Jay-Z, the best and most popular rapper alive during the early 2000s, Memphis Bleek nonetheless continually struggled to overcome his protégé reputation and break through on his own, and his third album, M.A.D.E., again falls a bit short of that mark. Even so, it’s a marked improvement for Bleek, a definite step forward and a sure showcase of his growing maturity. His first two albums, Coming of Age (1999) and Understanding (2000), had their moments, usually on the singles, but for the most part, they weren’t lasting statements. If anything, they stated that Bleek was no Jay-Z and had a long way to go if he ever wanted to approach those heights. Then he dropped off for a while. In fact, it took him three years until he returned with M.A.D.E., which is longer than some less fortunate rappers’ careers — in other words, a short lifetime in rap years. But the time off seemingly served Bleek well. Throughout M.A.D.E., his flow is tighter than ever, he gets the best beats of his career, and he performs with ferocity on most songs: the opening run of “Everything’s a Go” (with Jay-Z), “Round Here” (with Trick Daddy and T.I.), and “Just Blaze, Bleek & Free” (with Freeway) — all of which are produced by Just Blaze — get the album off to an astounding start. There’s really nowhere to go but down from here, of course, but the remaining hour of music has its moments, albeit sporadic ones. In particular, Kanye West turns in a surprisingly straight interpolation of Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T.” (titled “I Wanna Love U”), Scott Storch turns in a moody Dr. Dre-sounding production (“We Ballin’”), and Just Blaze turns in yet another hot track, a laid-back collabo with Beanie Sigel and Jay-Z (“Hypnotic”). In contrast, there are some fumbles, in particular a run-of-the-mill Nate Dogg duet that aims for “21 Questions” territory but misses. Taken as a whole, M.A.D.E. isn’t the standup statement of purpose that Bleek needed to drop, especially after he spent three years on the down-low, but it’s a noteworthy stride forward for the young rapper. Sure, a lot of the accolades should go out to Just Blaze, who carries the bulk of this album with his endlessly inventive productions, but Bleek deserves his share of props too. Made in the Dark $11.98 Before The Warning, Hot Chip was poppy, but not exactly pop; their songs had clever ideas, but were missing the pieces they needed to really make an impact. The Warning brought those pieces together with a satisfying click, making the band’s music immediate as well as pleasingly off-kilter. Made in the Dark isn’t quite as big a leap forward as The Warning was, but it doesn’t need to be — Hot Chip has already hit their stride, and now their pop machinery chugs along at full speed. Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard’s dry wit is illuminated by neon melodies and punctuated by attention-getting beats, as it was on The Warning, but that album had clear-cut singles, including “Over and Over” and “And I Was a Boy from School.” Here, it’s wonderfully unclear which songs are the A-sides, aside from the brilliant lead single, “Ready for the Floor,” which was the first clue that Made in the Dark was going to be something special. It builds from a rubber band bassline, piling nervy guitars, synths that sound like they were borrowed from Taco’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz” or Matthew Wilder’s “Break My Stride,” and a cheery yet bittersweet melody into a perfect fusion of pop and dance that is definitely ready for the floor. The rest of Made in the Dark boasts some of Hot Chip’s most kinetic music, with rhythms and melodies that are just as hyper-articulate as the wordplay: it takes a special kind of perverse wit to name one of the album’s most head-noddingly insistent songs “Don’t Dance.” “Bendable Poseable,” on the other hand, is exactly as wiggly as the title implies, and its ragga-tinged spoken word bits show that Hot Chip’s sound is more than bendable enough to accommodate almost any styles or influences that Taylor and Goddard want to fit into it. Made in the Dark expands Hot Chip’s emotional range as much as their musical range, swinging from the funky, pissed-off “Shake a Fist” to the stream-of-consciousness pop of “One Pure Thought,” a witty, wordy gem that comes across like Paul McCartney backed by New Order. Made in the Dark’s main weakness might be its ballads, but that may just be in comparison to its many energetic moments, which are so addictive that it feels like a forced come-down whenever the band slows things down. On their own terms, however, “We’re Looking for a Lot of Love” is luminously sad, and the title track’s heartfelt simplicity and restraint is impressive. And while “Whistle for Will” and “In the Privacy of Our Love” end the album on a strangely sleepy note, their awkwardness might make them a little sweeter precisely because they’re not slick. Without these ballads, Made in the Dark would have the ruthless perfection of a greatest-hits collection; as it is, it’s just a very, very good album. Hot Chip has honed their skills so much and so quickly that they’re almost unrecognizable from the band that made Coming on Strong just three years before. He would produce their third set, with Neil Ardley handling musical arrangements, and the result rose high above either of the group’s earlier efforts. As wildly ambitious as its components demanded, it opens with the soaring “Winter’s a Bummer” and then cruises on through eight further slices of wild virtuosity. Made in Sweden even found time to revisit a cut from their second album, “Little Cloud,” and reinvent their own past under lush new surroundings. With no track exceeding the seven-minute mark, and most settling around half that, nothing on Made in England (released in the U.K. as Mad River) overstays its welcome. Rather, it’s one of those records that leaves you demanding more of the same — which makes the band’s breakup just a few months later all the harder to bear. ~ Dave Thompson, Rovi

Made for Kings $11.98 Hip-hop, like 1960s-1970s soul and the blues, has had an abundance of regional variations, ranging from New York and Philadelphia styles to West Coast styles to the Dirty South — and that isn’t counting all the non-U.S. hip-hop that has come from different parts of Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The fact that so many rappers are obsessed with “representing the hood” has a lot do with it; if, for example, an MC is determined to let the world know that he/she is from Bethnal Green on London’s East End, there is a strong possibility that a very London-sounding album is going to be recorded. D-Loc, meanwhile, isn’t from London any more than he is from Montreal; D-Loc’s stomping ground is Southern California, and his West Coast perspective is impossible to miss on Made for Kings (a self-produced solo outing from the Kottonmouth Kings member). Even if D-Loc didn’t spend a lot of time reminding you that he is from Cali, there would be no mistaking the fact that this 2010 release is a textbook example of West Coast hip-hop. D-Loc’s flow is totally West Coast, as are his beats — and the rapper’s Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg/Warren G heritage comes through loud and clear on tracks like “Feels So Good,” “I Got It Made,” and “Game.” That is not to say that this CD is gangsta rap; D-Loc employs plenty of the baller/player/hustler imagery that West Coast gangsta rap is famous for, but minus the thuggishness of West Coast gangsta rap. And even though one of the tracks is titled “Gangsta Bitch,” Made for Kings is really an R-rated party album — not a thug life manifesto. D-Loc would rather rap about marijuana, expensive cars, clubbing, and scantily clad women than thug life. Man-Made $11.98 Once hailed as the second coming of Big Star, the trio of singer/songwriters who make up Teenage Fanclub — Norman Blake, Gerard Love, and Raymond McGinley — have attained the status of something more along the lines of a Scottish Crosby, Stills & Nash. Which is to say they are a band of equals with all three members consistently cranking out song after song of well-written melodic rock that references such icons of the genre as the Byrds, the Beach Boys, Badfinger, and yes Big Star. With 2005′s Man-Made can Tortoise be added to that list? Well, sort of. Recorded at Tortoise frontman John McEntire’s Soma studio in Chicago with McEntire at the controls and sometimes the keys, Man-Made is both all that one might hope a paring of classicist power pop and avant-garde post-rock could be, and then, depending on which end of the indie rock spectrum you’re coming from, perhaps slightly less. Upon hearing that the notoriously homebound boys from Glasgow were going to board a plane to the States, and enter the mad science lab of the man known for odd time signatures and archaic keyboards it raised expectations — perhaps unfairly — that the resulting album would be something unexpected and maybe even revolutionary. However, as is the tradition with most power pop craftsmen, the general approach is to aim for the perfect pop song each time out, resulting in albums that are rarely disappointing for fans, but which can rarely claim innovation or edginess. Happily, Man-Made lives up to this tradition and is as good an album as any Teenage Fanclub has made since Grand Prix. That said, given the high expectations of working with a maverick iconoclast like McEntire, even a longtime fan might be somewhat disappointed that the album isn’t more than yet another solid Fanclub release. Though McEntire’s production is subtle, his unique aesthetics are definitely apparent on Man-Made as odd keyboards and sundry other inevitably electronic apparatuses bubble and bleep just below the surface of fuzzed-out guitars, chugging basslines, and layered vocals. Primarily, the album takes off where the new tracks recorded for the band’s stellar 2003 retrospective, Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty-Six Seconds: A Short Cut to Teenage Fanclub, left off. To these ends, Love’s “Time Stops” and “Fallen Leaves” once again find the sweet-voiced bassist delving into sun-soaked Left Banke meets Moody Blues territory. Similarly, McGinley’s “Feel” evinces a hang-loose ’70s West Coast vibe that sounds something like Roger McGuinn fronting Hotel California-era Eagles, and if Teenage Fanclub ever had any shoegaze tendencies Blake reveals all with the blissful and Hammond-happy “Slow Fade.” While nobody could accuse Teenage Fanclub of taking huge creative risks, more often than not the tracks on Man-Made do resemble something along the lines of ’70s soft rock group America backed by Stereolab — which is a very cool thing. ~ Matt Collar, Rovi Performers:

Made in the Shade $14.38 Louisiana’s Red Stick Ramblers, led by the twin fiddle attack of Kevin Wimmer and Linzay Young, are a versatile little modern string band as likely to burst into some Hot Club jazz as they are to update some classic Cajun 2-step into a chooglin’ bit of swamp blues. On Made in the Shade, their fourth album and first for Sugar Hill Records, they do both of these things and more, employing everything from flamenco to Creole strains in their musical gumbo, a mix the band calls “Cajun gypsy swing.” Warmly recorded (Dirk Powell handled most of the production work) and full of an easy, joyous ambiance, Made in the Shade’s 12 tracks show a band that is at once traditional and experimental (often within the same song) and expert at fusing the two without sounding like they’ve created some sort of 2-step Frankenwaltz in the process. From the first track, the title tune “Made in the Shade,” a gliding, easy rolling account of distilling corn mash, to the final one, “The Smeckled Suite,” an Eastern-sounding flamenco tango jazz stew, the Ramblers deliver a delightful set of swamp-tinged vernacular roots music. Made the Harbor $11.98 On first listen, the debut from Mountain Man, an indie folk trio formed by singer/songwriters Molly Erin Sarle, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, and Amelia Randall, sounds like a record of its time, especially amidst the current crop of bearded, northwest folkies (Fleet Foxes), Midwest romancers (Bon Iver), and English new traditionalists (Laura Marling). Made in Dagenham $13.59 Made in Dagenham is a film about a strike at a Ford Motor plant in the London suburb of the title in 1968 by women workers seeking to achieve equal pay with men. The setting and plot allow for a soundtrack full of pop/rock songs of around that period, some of them touching on the theme and/or sung by women, most of those, naturally, Britons like Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, and Lulu. Jamaican Desmond Dekker’s renditions of his hit “Israelites” and of Jimmy Cliff’s “You Can Get It If You Really Want” both are in the spirit of the movie’s message, as are the songs of some Americans, notably the Temptations (“Get Ready”), James Brown (“It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World,” with its tag line, “but it wouldn’t mean nothin’ without a woman or a girl”), and Mama Cass (“It’s Getting Better”). Sometimes, the songs are just good oldies, like Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs’ “Wooly Bully” or Traffic’s “Paper Sun.” The album cover proclaims this to be “music from and inspired by” the film, but the only song that could have been inspired by it is the title tune, newly written by David Arnold and Billy Bragg, and sung by Shaw, in the style of the other tracks on the album. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

It Is All That Is Made $11.98 It’s very hard to tell from the cover of this release what you’re getting, but rest assured it isn’t an album of Renaissance and Baroque lute music, or even of contemporary compositions in that vein. Dutch lutenist and composer Jozef van Wissem uses the lute in an unusual context: he plays his own compositions, which fall essentially under the minimalist and trance umbrellas but also make use of the retrograde technique in a simple way: each piece plays out to a certain point and then goes into reverse. There’s nothing new in the simple chords and arpeggios of which these seven compositions are made up. What’s unusual is the presence of the lute itself, which goes counter to the general minimalist preference for pure tones. Whether you like this kind of thing depends entirely on your feelings about the source material, but the lute, an extremely complex instrument sonically, adds something to that source material. Van Wissem has played Renaissance music in the past, and he has augmented music of this sort with electronics. The plain lute may well be the most effective. Made in Germany $18.39 Having lost its second major-label recording contract following the release of its ninth studio album, Future Games: A Magical-Kahauna Dream, in 1977, Spirit toured Europe in the winter of 1978, resulting in the release of the group’s first live album, which appeared in three different configurations in three different territories. The basic source of the album was the band’s March 11, 1978, show at the Rainbow in London. The British version, on Illegal Records, was called Live Spirit, which was also the title of the U.S. album on Spirit’s own Potato Records label, but the West German release was called Made in Germany. All three versions include performances of five vintage Spirit songs, “Animal Zoo,” “1984,” “Nature’s Way,” “It’s All the Same,” and “I Got a Line on You,” as well as the previously unreleased songs “Looking Down From a Mountain” and “Hollywood Dream.” To these, the British album adds “Downer” and a cover of the Troggs’ (by way of Jimi Hendrix) “Wild Thing.” Neither of those tracks appear on the U.S. LP, which substitutes two other new Spirit songs, “Rock ‘N’ Roll Planet” and “These Are Words,” recorded in Florida. The German version is identical to the U.S. one in its contents (albeit with a different song sequence) except that it adds one more track, recorded in Germany, “Rockpalast Jam,” referring the German TV show Rockpalast, on which the group appeared. Thus, Made in Germany is a composite of performances from several different locations, and it also sounds like a fair amount of editing and overdubbing was done in the studio. The new songs, particularly “Rockpalast Jam” and “Rock ‘N’ Roll Planet,” are slight as compositions, though they provide a structure for guitarist/songwriter Randy California’s inventive improvisations. The familiar material is well-performed by the trio of California, bassist Larry “Fuzzy” Knight, and Ed Cassidy, with “It’s All the Same” stretched out to ten minutes to allow room for a drum solo before segueing into the band’s biggest hit and natural show closer, “I Got a Line on You.” “This CD, we are bold enough to consider one of the best live LP’s in rock-history,” the liner notes say, and if that seems a considerable exaggeration, nevertheless this is an album that should be enjoyed by Spirit’s fan base. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Ed Cassidy – Percussion, Drums; Larry Knight – Bass; Randy California – Bass, Guitar, Vocals

Made in Heaven $11.14 During the 1980s, Queen ceased to be a big record seller in the U.S., but maintained its superstar status at home. In the ’90s, following the death of Freddie Mercury, there was a brief resurgence of interest in America triggered by the inclusion of “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the movie Wayne’s World. But in 1995, when the surviving members got around to releasing the final recordings done with Mercury in the form of Made in Heaven, the status quo had returned. The album topped the charts in Western Europe, with its single, “Heaven for Everyone,” reaching the Top Ten, while in the U.S. it was on and off the charts within weeks. Musically, Made in Heaven harked back to Queen’s 1970s heyday with its strong melodies and hard rock guitar playing, topped by Mercury’s bravura singing and some of the massed choir effects familiar from “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Even if one did not know that these songs were sung in the shadow of death, that subject would be obvious. The lyrics were imbued with life-and-death issues, from the titles — “Let Me Live,” “My Life Has Been Saved,” and “Too Much Love Will Kill You” — to lines like “It’s hopeless — so hopeless to even try” (“It’s a Beautiful Day”), “Waiting for possibilities/Don’t see too many around” (“Made in Heaven”), and “I long for peace before I die” (“Mother Love”). The odd thing about this was that Mercury’s over-the-top singing had always contained a hint of camp humor, and it continued to here, even when the sentiments clearly were as heartfelt as they were theatrically overstated. Maybe Mercury was determined to go out the same way he had come in, as a diva.
