American Pie $19.98 Don McLean’s second album, American Pie, which was his first to gain recognition after the negligible initial sales of 1970′s Tapestry, is necessarily dominated by its title track, a lengthy, allegorical history of rock & roll, because it became an unlikely hit, topping the singles chart and putting the LP at number one as well. “American Pie” has remained as much a cultural touchstone as a song, sung by everyone from Garth Brooks to Madonna, its title borrowed for a pair of smutty teen comedies, while the record itself has earned a registered three-million plays on U.S. radio stations. There may not be much more to note about it, then, except perhaps that even without a crib sheet to identify who’s who, the song can still be enjoyed for its engaging melody and singable chorus, which may have more to do with its success than anything else. Of course, the album also included “Vincent,” McLean’s paean to Van Gogh, which has been played two-million times. Nothing else on the album is as effective as the hits, but the other eight original songs range from sensitive fare like “Till Tomorrow” to the sarcastic, uptempo “Everybody Loves Me, Baby.” American Pie — the album — is very much a record of its time; it is imbued with the vague depression of the early ’70s that infected the population and found expression in the works of singer/songwriters. “American Pie” — the song — is really a criticism of what happened in popular music in the ’60s, and “Vincent” sympathizes with Van Gogh’s suicide as a sane comment on an insane world. “Crossroads” and “Empty Chairs” are personal reflections full of regret and despondency, with the love song “Winterwood” providing the only respite. In the album’s second half, the songs get more portentous, tracing society’s ills into war and spiritual troubles in “The Grave” and “Sister Fatima.” The songs are made all the more poignant by the stately folk-pop arrangements and McLean’s clear, direct tenor. It was that voice, equally effective on remakes of pop oldies, that was his salvation when he proved unable to match the songwriting standard set on Tapestry and this collection. Hot Apple Pie $11.14 Hot Apple Pie is the latest stop on the long road for country journeyman Brady Seals. A nephew of Jim Seals (the Seals of Seals & Crofts) and country hitmaker Dan Seals, Brady got his first big break in the early ’90s as a member of Little Texas, and he shepherded them through some big hits before leaving for a solo career halfway through the decade. After a couple of mainstream country albums, he had a rootsy independent release with Thompson Street in 2003, which featured Mark “Sparky” Matejka on lead guitar. Following that, Seals and Matejka hooked up with bassist Keith Horne and Trey Landry for Hot Apple Pie, whose 2005 eponymous debut is the opposite of Thompson Street. Released on Dreamworks Nashville and produced by Richard Landis, Hot Apple Pie is a big, slick, knowing contemporary country album that dabbles in a little bit of everything not just because the bandmembers can, but because they want to see what sticks. So, the album begins with the goofy novelty of “Hillbillies,” which has a bit of the ironic proud-to-be-a-redneck vibe of Big & Rich (it surfaces again toward the end of the album with “Redneck Revolution,” a slow bluesy crawl so contrived it makes the opener seem easy), then rolls into the bouncy retro country-pop of Al Anderson’s “We’re Makin’ Up.” Soon after that, the group dives into a slick power ballad with “The Good Life,” before revamping the Band’s classic “The Shape I’m In” as breakneck bluegrass, complete with alternating lead vocals, then hauling out Willie Nelson for a duet on “Slowin’ Down the Fall.” The latter two moves, along with the Rodney Crowell co-written “Annabelle (Arkansas Is Callin’ You),” indicate that Hot Apple Pie have good taste, serious chops, and genuine credentials as pure country musicians, smart enough to know not just what makes for good country music, but smart enough to know what makes it onto country radio. And that’s the problem with their album — half of it is really good, smart, fun country, the other half is pandering to the whims of radio, whether it’s on the aforementioned “Hillbillies” or such lumbering midtempo numbers as “Everybody Wants to Dance With My Baby.” The rest of the album doesn’t just prove that Hot Apple Pie are better than those tunes, but that they know that they’re slumming it with songs like these. American Folk Blues Festivals 1963-1966: The British Tours [DVD] $15.99 Like the previous three volumes of this superb series, American Folk Blues Festivals 1963-1966: The British Tours presents about 75 minutes of mid-’60s European television performances by blues legends. The only real difference is that all of these were filmed in England (hence the subtitle “The British Tours 1963-1966″), where appreciation of the blues was really taking off and, of course, making a big impression on the U.K. pop scene via artists like the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. While the word “legends” is thrown around a lot in reviewing vintage blues compilations, this is one instance where it’s not overhyping the case. Every single performer here is legendary. Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Sonny Boy Williamson were Chicago blues giants,; the more rural and rawer side of the form is caught by Lightnin’ Hopkins and Big Joe Williams; R&B is represented by Big Joe Turner, and soul by Sugar Pie DeSanto; and the blues’ roots in jazz and gospel are captured by Lonnie Johnson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe respectively. Every single performer here is caught, in well-preserved black-and-white footage, at or near the peak of his or her form, sometimes with some of their very most famous songs, whether it’s Waters doing “Got My Mojo Working,” Williams playing “Baby Please Don’t Go,” or Williamson singing “Bye Bye Bird.” That’s not even mentioning the top talents that can be seen as accompanists at various points, including bassist Willie Dixon, guitarists Hubert Sumlin and Otis Rush, and pianists Sunnyland Slim and Otis Spann. As for the most unusual and colorful performances, perhaps Williamson wins on that account — though not by much — by playing one end of a harmonica without holding it, as if he’s chewing a cigar. Also novel is Junior Wells’ 1966 performance of Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say,” delivered (and danced through) in modified James Brown fashion; it might not be the song you most associate with classic blues (or even Wells’ blues), but it’… |
