We are testing out material for book questions, need some math junkies to answer the questions and give advice.
A Japanese bullet train leaves the station tra traveling west at 164 mph. A pigeon which was resting on the train is startled and starts flying east at 40 mph. After two hours, how far apart are the pigeon and the train? This problem can be solved without using variables to represent unknowns. However, you will need to use a distance diagram, and a table to set up the problem. You also do not need to do a formal check; but do double check your math!
Okay, pretty straightforward:
They both leave a central point.
The train travels 164mph in one direction for two hours. 164 x 2 = 328 miles.
The pigeon leaves 40mph in the opposite direction for two hours. 40 x 2 = 80.
Therefore, they are 408 miles apart.

A homing pigeon was fitted with an aluminum breast harness to which could be attached a lightweight timedelayed miniature camera.
