Toys and Models YF23 Advanced Fighter

Toys and Models YF23 Advanced Fighter

$233.94

The Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF23 was a prototype fighter aircraft designed for the United States Air Force. It was entered in the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program in the early 1980s but lost out to the Lockheed YF22 which entered production as the F22 Raptor. Two YF23 prototypes were designed and built by Northrop and McDonnell Douglas as part of the demonstration and evaluation phase of the ATF selection program which concluded in 1990. One prototype was powered by twin Pratt and Whitney YF119 turbofan engines while the other was installed with two General Electric YF120 turbofan engines. The YF23 employed stealth characteristics and was capable of supersonic cruise flight without afterburner. The aircraft achieved a speed of Mach 1.8 during the program. There was no official USAF nickname for the YF23A thus the Northrop YF23A team personnel chose the name Black Widow II to commemorate the Northrop P61 Black Widow the first American aircraft specifically designed as a night fighter. In April 1991 the Air Force selected Lockheeds YF22 design for fullscale development. According to the USAF factors in the selection for production of the F22 were better design for maintainability greater potential for future development and slightly lower cost. Supporters of the YF23 believe that the YF23 should have won the ATF competition due to its agility stealth and greater fuel capacity.

Toys and Models AH64D Apache Longbow

Toys and Models AH64D Apache Longbow

$324.94

The AH64 Apache is the United States Armys main attack helicopter. It conducts rear close and shaping missions as well as distributed operations and precision strikes against relocatable targets. It provides armed reconnaissance when required in day night obscured battlefield and adverse weather conditions. It was designed by Hughes Helicopters which in 1984 was purchased by McDonnell Douglas. In August 1997 McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing. The AH64D variant is now being produced by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. After the cancellation of the AH56 Cheyenne the US Army sought an aircraft to fill the antiarmor attack role. It was to be better than the AH1 Cobra in firepower performance and range and have the maneuverability to fly napoftheearth missions. Hence the Army issued a request for proposals for an advanced attack helicopter in 1972. Five manufacturers submitted proposals and in 1973 the US Department of Defense selected Bell and Hughes as finalists. Each company built prototypes which underwent a flight test program. After evaluating test results the Army awarded the contract to Hughes. In late 1981 the AH64 was given the name Apache in keeping with the Armys tradition of using Native American tribal names for its helicopters. In 1983 the first production helicopter was rolled out. The AH64 entered service in 1984 and was first used in combat during the 1989 US invasion of Panama. The AH64D Apache Longbow a more advanced model began service in 1998. Both the AH64A Apache and the AH64D Apache Longbow have played important roles in several Middle Eastern wars including the Gulf War Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. The Apaches proved to be excellent tank hunters and have destroyed hundreds of armored vehicles mainly of the Iraqi army. The AH64D has also been deployed in Afghanistan as part of Operation Anaconda and from June 2003 in South Korea. Both the AH64A and AH64D are still in active

Toys and Models C130 Hercules Gunship

Toys and Models C130 Hercules Gunship

$259.94

The C130 Hercules Gunship has the record for being the heaviest and biggest aircraft to land on an aircraft carrier. When the Korean War started in June 1950 it illustrated that the performance of some transport aircrafts like the C119 Flying Boxcars and C46 Commandos were insufficient. In February 2 1951 the United States Air Force released a General Operating Requirement for a new transport aircraft. It was issued to aircraft companies like Boeing Fairchild North American Northrop Lockheed Martin Company and Airlifts Incorporated. The transport aircraft would be capable of accommodating 92 passengers or 64 paratroopers can fly with one engine stopped and can reach a range of 1100 nautical miles. The Martin Company Fairchild Northrop and North American refused to join. The companies who agreed proposed nine designs. The Lockheed submitted two designs Boeing submitted one Douglas submitted three and the Airlifts Incorporated submitted one. The design proposals were a tight fight between the Lockheed Company and the Douglas. A 130 page proposal for Lockheed L206 was submitted by the Lockheed team that was led by Willis Hawkins. The president and chief engineer of Lockheed Hall Hibbard noticed the proposal and gave it to Kelly Johnson. Hall Hibbard and Kelly Johnson signed the proposal and got the contract designated Model 82 in July 2 1951. In August 23 1954 the YC130 prototype made its first flight from the Lockheed plant in California. Its serial number was 533397 and it was the second prototype but the first to fly. Stanley Beltz and Roy Wimmer were the pilots of the prototype and Jack Real and Dick Stanton were the flight engineers.

Known as the Joint Strike Fighter (previously the Joint Advanced Strike Technology) program the F35 Lightning II is a family of multirole aircraft developed under a multinational acquisition program. In cooperation with BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman the F35 is currently under development and production by Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin was selected by the Department of Defense (DOD) on October 26 2001 after beating out competition from McDonnell Douglas and then Boeing in the design and demonstration phases of the program (19942001). The aircraft will be powered by the Pratt Whitney F135 engine. The distinguishing feature of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) version of the JSF is its short takeoff/vertical landing capability (STOVL). There will not be an internally mounted machine gun but an external gun can be fitted. This version requires controllability on all axes while hovering. Another critical design feature is its impact on the ground surface beneath it during hover. The USMC expects their version of the JSF will replace the F/A18 Hornet and the AV8 Harrier. The Marine Corps expects to purchase 480 STOVL versions of the F35.

$220.94

The KC10A Extender is an air mobility command advanced tanker and cargo aircraft designed to provide increased global mobility for US armed forces. Its primary mission is aerial refueling but it is capable of simultaneously carrying fighter support personnel and equipment on overseas deployments. It can also transport litter and ambulatory patients using patient support pallets during aeromedical evacuations. The KC10A was the second consecutive McDonnell Douglas transport aircraft to be selected by the US Air Force following the C9 Nightingale. The KC10A was derived from the civilian DC10 airliner and entered service in 1981. Although it retains 88 percent of the DC10 it has additional systems and equipment necessary for its Air Force mission. These include military avionics seated aerial refueling operator station and aerial refueling receptacle and satellite communications. It also has three more large fuel tanks. Using either an advanced aerial refueling boom or a hose and drogue centerline refueling system the KC10A can refuel a wide variety of US and allied military aircraft within the same mission. The aircraft is equipped with lighting for night operations. During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991 the KC10A provided inflight refueling to aircraft from the US armed forces and other coalition forces. Inflight refueling was vital to rapid airlift of materiel and forces in the early stages of Desert Shield. Furthermore the KC10A along with the KC135 transported tons of cargo and thousands of troops in support of the Persian Gulf buildup. The KC10A and the KC135 conducted approximately 51 700 separate refueling operations and delivered 475 million liters of fuel without missing a single schedule.

The DC7 is an American aircraft built by Douglas Aircraft company in 1953 to 1958 and was the last major piston engine powered transport of Douglas. The early DC7s were only sold to US carriers. The extended range variant of the DC7 the DC7C Seven Seas was released by the Douglas Aircraft since European carriers could not take advantage of he small range increase in the early DC7. Pan American Airlines used the DC7C aircraft to inaugurate the first nonstop New YorkLondon service. Pan Am flew the DC7Cs for only two and and a half years before entering the jet age. The DC7 is the largest propeller transport aircraft that Pan Am has ever used. The DC7C was also used by several other overseas airlines fleets. In 1959 Douglas began converting DC7A and DC7C aircraft into DC7F freighters extending the life of the aircraft past its viability as a passenger transport.

The Douglas SBD Dauntless nicknamed Barge Clunk or Slow but Deadly and was the standard carrierborne divebomber of the US Navy from mid1940 until November 1943 when the Curtiss Helldiver replaced it. The SBD was gradually phased out during 1944 and the 20 June 1944 strike against the Japanese Mobile Fleet in the Battle of the Philippine Sea was its last major action as a carrierborne aircraft. Total of nine Douglas SBD5 Dauntless Mk 1 were received by the Fleet Air Arm under contract No. The first Dauntless JS997 was delivered from Speke to the IAD Flight of the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) in November 1943 where it carried out handling and dive bombsight tests (JS997). The Dauntless was subsequently equipped at Wittering by 787 and 700 squadrons from July 1944 till February 1946. The SBD5 model was the standard aircraft carrier based divebomber of the US Navy from mid1940 until November 1943 when it was replaced by the Curtis SB2C Helldiver. This model of SBD Dauntless was considered obsolete even before the Pacific War started and was supposed to be retired before Pearl Harbor occurred. Needless to say this did not happen. The SBD went on to be one of the most famous dive bombers in existence (next to the Stuka) and this was mostly due to extreme luck during the Battle of Midway.

Toys and Models AV8B Harrier II USMC

$232.77

The McDonnell Douglas AV8B Harrier II is a family of secondgeneration vertical/short takeoff and landing jet multirole aircraft of the late 20th century. Developed from the earlier Hawker Siddeley Harriers it is primarily used for light attack or multirole tasks typically operated from small aircraft carriers. Versions are used by several NATO countries including the United Kingdom Spain Italy and the United States. Though it shares the designation letter number with the earlier AV8A Harrier the AV8B Harrier II was extensively redesigned by McDonnell Douglas. Both models are commonly referred to as the Harrier Jumpjet. The AV8B had its direct origins in a joint BritishUS project (HawkerSiddeley and McDonnell Douglas) for a muchimproved Harrier aircraft the AV16. However the British later pulled out of the program. Using things learned from AV16 development McDonnell continued the development work which lead to the AV8B for the US Marine Corps. The aircraft was centered on the Marines need for a light ground attack airplane and focused on payload and range as opposed to speed. The first Harrier IIs produced were commonly known as the Day Attack variant and are no longer in service. Most were upgraded to Night Attack Harrier or Harrier II Plus standards with the remainder being withdrawn from service. Several variants of the Harrier are used by four countries military forces: the United Kingdom the United States Spain and Italy. The US Marine Corps has operated the AV8B since 1985.

Toys and Models KB247UATE B247 United 1/48 Scale Model

$246.94

The revolutionary Boeing 247 developed in 1933 was an allmetal twin engine airplane and the first modern passenger airliner. It had a gyro panel for instrument flying an autopilot pneumatically operated deicing equipment a variablepitch propeller and retractable landing gear. It also featured thick upholstered chairs an insulated cabin a lavatory and individual overhead lighting. The phenomenon of the Model 247 caught the attention of America s young airline companies. When its commitment to United prevented Boeing from filling orders fast enough Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA) turned to Douglas. Douglas offered to build something similar to the Boeing 247 only faster and larger. TWA quickly accepted the proposal. The Douglas DC1 which was eventually refined as the legendary DC3 immediately attracted new customers. Thus making the 247 obsolete less than a year after its first flight. Seventyfive 247s were built. Boeing Air Transport flew 60 247s. United Aircraft Corporation flew 10 and the rest went to Deutsche Lufthansa and a private owner in China. The Boeing 247s remained in airline service until World War II when several were converted into C73 transports and trainers. Some were still flying along with the Douglas DC2 that supplanted it the Model 247 ushered in the age of speed reliability safety and comfort in air travel.

Toys and Models F14A Tomcat VF84 Jolly Rogers

$337.94

For over three decades the primary maritime air superiority fighter fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform of the United States Navy (USN) has been the F14 Tomcat. It is a supersonic twinengine tandem seating swingwing aircraft manufactured by Grumman developed after the cancellation of the General Dynamics F111B project. It was the first of the American fourth generation teen series jet fighters that was designed incorporating the experience of air combat in Vietnam against Russian MiG aircraft. The F14 Tomcat program was initiated when problems with the F111B became evident and could not be resolved to the Navy s satisfaction. In May 1968 funding for the F111B was terminated. The USN specified for a new fleet air defense fighter with the primary role of intercepting Soviet bombers before they could launch missiles against the carrier group. In addition the Navy wanted the aircraft to possess inherent air superiority characteristics. Of the five companies that submitted bids McDonnell Douglas and Grumman were selected as finalists in December 1968. Grumman had been a partner on the F111B and had started work on an alternative as the project was dwindling giving the company an edge over its competitors. In January 1969 Grumman was awarded the contract. Twentytwo months later the F14 had its maiden flight on December 21 1970. Though lighter than the F111B it was still the largest and heaviest US fighter to ever fly from an aircraft carrier. The Tomcat entered service with the US Navy in 1972 and replaced the McDonnell Douglas F4 Phantom II starting in September 1974. The aircraft had its first kills on August 19 1981 when two F14s shot down two Libyan Su22 Fitters over the Gulf of Sidra in what became known as the Gulf of Sidra incident. On January 4 1989 two more F14s destroyed two Libyan MiG23 Floggers in a second Gulf of Sidra incident.

The Douglas Skystreak (D5581) was designed in 1945 by the Douglas Aircraft Company for the US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics in conjunction with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The Skystreak was a turbojet powered aircraft that took off from the ground under its own power and had straight wings and tails. The D5581 reached Mach 0.99 in level flight but only flew supersonic in a dive. In the public mind much of the research performed by the D5581 was quickly overshadowed by Chuck Yeager and the supersonic X1 rocket plane. In 1978 McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company and British Aerospace developed the T45C Goshawk McD/Douglas a carriersuitable version of the British Aerospace Hawk. The first Hawk which flew Aug. 21 1974 was established as the Royal Air Force principal jet trainer and served the U.S. and European air forces. The T45C Goshawk McD/Douglas has been used for intermediate and advanced portions of the Navy/Marine Corps strike pilot training program with Training Air Wing ONE at Naval Air Station Meridian Mississippi and Training Air Wing TWO at Naval Air Station Kingsville Texas. The T45C replaced the T2C Buckeye trainer and the TA4J Skyhawk II trainer with an integrated training system that includes the T45Goshawk McD/Douglas Goshawk aircraft operational and instrument flight simulators (OFT/IFT) academics and training integration system support. Beginning in Fiscal Year 2008 the T45C Goshawk McD/Douglas will also commence use in the advanced portion of Navy/Marine Corps Naval Flight Officer (NFO) training with Training Air Wing SIX at Naval Air Station Pensacola Florida. The T45 s A and C models are currently in operational use. The T45A which became operational in 1991 contains an analog cockpit design while the newer T45C which was first delivered in December 1997 features a new digital glass cockpit design. All T45A aircraft will eventually be converted to a T45C configuration under the T45 Required Avionics Modernization Program (T45 RAMP).

Derived from the DC9 the McDonnell Douglas MD80 is a twinengine mediumrange singleaisle commercial jet airplane. It was introduced commercially in October 1980 by Swissair and can seat up to 172 passengers. Douglas Aircraft developed the DC9 in the 1960s as a shortrange companion to the larger DC8. The MD80 was the second generation of the DC9. It was originally called the DC980 before it was redesignated in July 1983 as a marketing move to show that McDonnell Douglas had an airliner for the 1980s. The MD80 features a fuselage about 14 feet longer than the DC9. The wings were redesigned by adding sections at the wing root and tip for a wing that is 28 percent larger. The cockpit avionics aerodynamics and engines were upgraded. It also has a higher maximum takeoff weight greater fuel capacity and longer range than the DC9. The MD80 has been used by airlines around the world. While many airlines have started to retire the aircraft in the 2000s it is still flown extensively by some including Delta Air Lines on domestic routes. Delta is the second largest operator of the MD80 after American Airlines.

Toys and Models Fokker FVII F7 Trimotor

$259.94

In 1920 the Fokker F.VII airliner was produced by the Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker Fokker s American subsidiary Atlantic Aircraft Corporation and other companies under license. The original Dutch design of 1924 was a singleengined highwinged monoplane. Fokker modified the design with two additional engines to enter the Inaugural Ford Reliability Tour in 1925 in which it won. Consequently the production versions F.VIIa/3m F.VIIb/3m and F.10 all had three engines and the aircraft became popularly known as the Fokker Trimotor. The F.VII was the aircraft of choice for many early airlines both in Europe and the Americas. Along with the similar Ford Trimotor it dominated the American market in the late 1920s. However the popularity of the Fokker quickly came to an end after the death of Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne in the crash of TWA Flight 599. The subsequent investigation which revealed problems with the Fokker s plywood laminate construction resulted in the banning of the aircraft on commercial flights and the rise of allmetal aircraft such as the Boeing 247 and Douglas DC2. The F.VII was a 10seat transport using one 400hp GnomeRhone Jupiter 9cylinder radial piston engine therefore giving the airplane a maximum speed of 115 mph cruising speed of 96 mph service ceiling of 8 530 feet and a range of 721 miles. The F.VII was used by many explorers and aviation pioneers including Richard E. Byrd Lester Maitland Albert Hegenberger Sir Charles Kingsford Smith Amelia Earhart and Carl Spaatz.

Toys and Models CF004ACT F4E Phantom II Aircraft

$233.94

The supersonic longrange allweather F4 Phantom II was designed for the United States Navy (USN) by McDonnell Douglas. It first entered service in 1960. During the Vietnam War it was the primary air superiority fighter and a workhorse fighterbomber for the US Air Force (USAF) Navy and Marine Corps. By 1963 it had been adopted by the USAF for the fighterbomber role. When production ended in 1981 a total of 5 195 F4s had been built making it the most numerous American supersonic military aircraft. In 2000 over 1 000 units were in service with 11 nations worldwide. Innovations in the F4 included an advanced pulsedoppler radar and extensive use of titanium in the airframe. It could carry up to 8 480 kg of weapons such as airtoair and airtoground missiles as well as unguided guided and nuclear bombs. The F4E is the leading Phantom model with 1 389 planes built. It took its maiden flight on June 30 1967. The F4E had an additional fuselage fuel tank leadingedge slats for increased maneuverability an improved engine and an internally mounted 20 mm multibarrel gun with an improved firecontrol system. The slats weapons and radar controls were optimized for dogfighting thus improving the aircraft s airtoair capabilities. In air combat the F4 s greatest advantage was its thrust which permitted a skilled pilot to engage and disengage from the fight at will. Due to its distinctive appearance and its widespread service with various militaries the F4 is one of the best known icons of the Cold War. It performed well in the Vietnam War and ArabIsraeli conflicts with F4 crews achieving 393 aerial victories and completing countless ground attack sorties. The Phantom II has the distinction of being the last US fighter to attain ace status in the 20th century. It has also set 16 world records and was the only aircraft used by both the USAF Thunderbirds and the USN Blue Angels. Actual size of Model is 10 wingspan x 16 1/2 length.

In 1936 Douglas DC s military career began in 1936 when the Army Air Corps ordered a pair of DC2s and then a contract followed for 18 more DC2s. By 1941 the time when the Army Corps became transformed as the Army Air Forces they selected the C47 Skytrain a modified version of the DC3 to become their standard transport aircraft. The C47 Skytrain s major modifications include a reinforced fuselage door and an additional large cargo door. Other modifications include the fitting of cargo hooks beneath the center wing section and the removal of the tail cone to mount a hook for towing gliders. The C47 could carry up to 6 000 cargo. It could also hold a fully assembled jeep. As a transport troop it could carry 28 soldiers in full combat gear. AS a medical gear it could accommodate 14 stretcher patients and three nurses. Over 10 000 aircraft were produced in Long Beach and Santa Monica California and Oklahoma City. Basic versions were built and the aircraft was given 22 designations (AC47D gunship the EC47 the EC47Q and the C53 Skytrooper.) The Royal Canadian Air Force also adopted the use of C47 for search and rescue operations throughout the 1940s and 50s. The C47 remained in service long after World War II and played a critical role in the initial stages of the Berlin Airlift and saw action in the Korean and Vietnam wars. The C47 was subsequently replaced by the C54.

A-4 Skyhawk Blue Angels 1/40 Scale Model Aircraft

A-4 Skyhawk Blue Angels 1/40 Scale Model Aircraft

$136.19

The Blue Angels chose the A-4 in the early 70s, replacing the thundering F-4. By adopting the Skyhawk, the team now had an aircraft that was much more aerobatic than before. This allowed for a tighter display and the ability to keep much of the performance in front of the audience. The A-4 Skyhawk was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Corporation and was designed by Ed Heinemann. Its primary users are United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. Its maiden flight happened on the 22nd of June 1954 but it was introduced in 1956. The A-4 Skyhawk is a lightweight, single engine attack aircraft. It is said to be one of the most famous attack aircrafts ever designed. The short range attack and close support aircraft was originally intended for the U.S. Navy and Marine forces. The A-4F variant was a refinement of A-4E. It has extra avionics housed in a hump on the fuselage spine. Some of this variant served with Blue Angels acrobatic team during 1973 to 1986. The Blue Angels are the best U.S. military aerobatic team. They fly different kinds of aircraft including Grumman Hellcats, Bearcat, Panther, and the Skyhawk. The A-4 Skyhawk was chosen in the early 70s over F-4 as Skyhawk is said to be more fuel efficient than the Phantom. It was chosen because it was the aircraft that was more appropriate that time in the midst of an oil crisis. With the A-4 used by the team, different display was done. The Skyhawk was more aerobatic than the other aircraft. This allowed them to have a tighter display and be able to keep their performance in front of the audience. The pilots of the Blue Angels enjoyed flying the A-4 Skyhawk because it is easy to maintain and the accident rate was quite low. Eventually, there were new aircrafts that replaced the Skyhawk. It retired in 1976 for the U.S. Navy while in 1998 in U.S. Marine Corps. However it is still active in other countries. Dimensions: 17.25 L x 16.5 W x 8 H

A1H Skyraider USN 1/40 Scale Model Aircraft

A1H Skyraider USN 1/40 Scale Model Aircraft

$121.92

The AD-6 (A-1H), also known as SPAD (an acronym, as in Single Place Attack, Douglas ), was a U.S. single-seat attack bomber manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Company. The prototype of the Skyraider was first flown on March 18, 1945 then it was first introduced in the 1950s. The A1 Skyraider first saw combat in the Korean War, where its long loiter time and heavy load-hauling capability gave it a distinct utility advantage over the jet aircraft of the time. A total of 3,180 Skyraiders were built during its last production in 1957. The A-1H Skyraider version of the A1 Skyraider is equipped with four 20 mm guns. The guns were installed on the wings of the aircraft. The A-1H Skyraider can carry many different types of bombs, gun pods, mines on its external wing stations. It can also have fuel tanks for long range missions. The A-H was one of the last versions of Skyraider aside from the AD-7. A-1H Skyraider is a single-seat aircraft that has three dive breaks. A total of 713 were built. It has a maximum speed of 320 miles per hour and is equipped with 4 x 20 mm of cannons. The primary mission of the A-1H Skyraider is to support the ground forces of the Army. Its compartment in the middle can be equipped with passenger seats and for carrying heavy cargo. In the Vietnam War, the United States Army Air Force used it mostly on air support role. It was efficient in giving some back up for rescue tasks. On September 1, 1968, Colonel William A. Jones flew an A-1H Skyraider. He was awarded with a Medal of Honor because he had returned to his base and informed the position of a downed flight crew member, suffering burns and damages to his attack bomber. AH-64A Apache 1/32 Scale Model Helicopter

$166.45

The AH-64 is an attack helicopter of the United States Army and the AH-1 Cobra successor. It was manufactured by the Hughes, McDonnell Douglas, and Boeing IDS. Its maiden flight was on the 30th of September 1975 and it is still active in service. Its primary users are the United States Army, Israel Air Force, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and Royal Netherlands Air Force. This helicopter was produced in 1984 up to the present time. The Apache is a two-seat principal attack helicopter with two General Electric T700 turboshaft engines. It carries a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rockets mounted on its stub wing pylons. It is also armed with a 30mm M230 chain gun. It is built to operate day or night and even in bad weather with the use of avionics and electronics like Target Acquisition and Designation System to endure the front line environment. In 1989, the Apache was used the first time in combat through the invasion of Panama, known as Operation Just Cause. Two of its variants, the AH-64A and the AH-64D, have the most important role in some of the wars in the Middle East such as the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. These two variants are serving the United States Army. They are the major models of the AH-64. Dimensions: 18.25 L x 10 W x 5.28 H

AH-64D Apache Longbow 1/32 Scale Model Helicopter

AH-64D Apache Longbow 1/32 Scale Model Helicopter

$146.74

The AH-64 Apache is the United States Armys main attack helicopter. It conducts rear, close and shaping missions, as well as distributed operations and precision strikes against relocatable targets. It provides armed reconnaissance when required in day, night, obscured battlefield and adverse weather conditions. It was designed by Hughes Helicopters, which in 1984 was purchased by McDonnell Douglas. In August 1997, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing. The AH-64D variant is now being produced by Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. After the cancellation of the AH-56 Cheyenne, the U.S. Army sought an aircraft to fill the anti-armor attack role. It was to be better than the AH-1 Cobra in firepower, performance and range, and have the maneuverability to fly nap-of-the-earth missions. Hence, the Army issued a request for proposals for an advanced attack helicopter in 1972. Five manufacturers submitted proposals, and in 1973 the U.S. Department of Defense selected Bell and Hughes as finalists. Each company built prototypes which underwent a flight test program. After evaluating test results, the Army awarded the contract to Hughes. In late 1981, the AH-64 was given the name Apache in keeping with the Armys tradition of using Native American tribal names for its helicopters. In 1983, the first production helicopter was rolled out. The AH-64 entered service in 1984 and was first used in combat during the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama. The AH-64D Apache Longbow, a more advanced model, began service in 1998. Both the AH-64A Apache and the AH-64D Apache Longbow have played important roles in several Middle Eastern wars, including the Gulf War, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. The Apaches proved to be excellent tank hunters and have destroyed hundreds of armored vehicles, mainly of the Iraqi army. The AH-64D has also been deployed in Afghanistan as part of Operation Anaconda, and from June 2003, in South Korea. Both the AH-64A and A

The American-manufactured AV-8B Harrier jet fighter of British design is on active duty with the Marines. It can take off vertically from the deck of a ship or forest clearing, and then accelerate to nearly the speed of sound. The AV-8B Harrier was a Short Take Off and Vertical Landing strike aircraft. It was manufactured by McDonnell Douglas, Boeing and BAE Systems. Its maiden flight was on the 9th of November 1978 and introduced on the 12th of January 1985. Its primary users are U.S. Marine Corps; Royal Air Force and Navy; Spanish Navy; and the Italian Navy. This aircraft was developed from Hawker Siddeley Harrier and BAE Sea Harrier. The AV-8B was a single-seat, light attack aircraft that provide offensive air support to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force or MAGTF. Its primary function was to attack and destroy surface targets under day and night visual conditions. It can operate from a variety of ships, forward sites such as roads, and many others. AV-8B Harrier II USMC 1/48 Scale Model Aircraft

AV-8B Harrier II USMC 1/48 Scale Model Aircraft

$119.92

The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II is a family of second-generation vertical/short takeoff and landing jet multi-role aircraft of the late 20th century. Developed from the earlier Hawker Siddeley Harriers, it is primarily used for light attack or multi-role tasks, typically operated from small aircraft carriers. Versions are used by several NATO countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and the United States. Though it shares the designation letter number with the earlier AV-8A Harrier, the AV-8B Harrier II was extensively redesigned by McDonnell Douglas. Both models are commonly referred to as the Harrier Jump-jet. The AV8B had its direct origins in a joint British-US project (Hawker-Siddeley and McDonnell Douglas) for a much-improved Harrier aircraft, the AV-16. However the British later pulled out of the program. Using things learned from AV-16 development, McDonnell continued the development work which lead to the AV-8B for the US Marine Corps. The aircraft was centered on the Marines need for a light ground attack airplane and focused on payload and range as opposed to speed. The first Harrier IIs produced were commonly known as the Day Attack variant, and are no longer in service. Most were upgraded to Night Attack Harrier or Harrier II Plus standards, with the remainder being withdrawn from service. Several variants of the Harrier are used by four countries military forces: the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain and Italy. The US Marine Corps has operated the AV-8B since 1985. Dimensions: 11.25 L x 13 W x 6 H

 B-17 Flying Fortress Tondelayo

B-17 Flying Fortress Tondelayo

$99.5

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the then-United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps’ expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing’s design that they ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances.

B-17G Sentimental Journey 1/62 Scale Model Aircraft

$138.45

Immortalized in cinema and song, and personalized with flamboyant nose art by their crew of ten, this nearly indestructible aircraft earned its place in history as the most celebrated bomber of WWII. The B-17 flew in combat on every front world-wide. The B-17G was introduced onto the Fortress production line in July of 1943, and was destined to be produced in larger numbers than any other Fortress variant. The most readily-noticeable innovation introduced by the B-17G was the power-operated Bendix turret mounted in a chin-type installation underneath the nose. This turret was equipped with two 0.50-inch machine guns. The B-17G now had the defensive firepower of no less than thirteen 0.50-inch machine guns — two chin guns, two cheek guns, two guns in the dorsal turret, two guns in the ventral turret, two guns in the waist, two guns in the tail, and one gun in the roof of the radio operators position. The B-17G entered service with the Eighth and Fifteenth Air Forces in late 1943. When production finally terminated in 1945, a total of 4035 B-17Gs had been built by Boeing, 2395 by Douglas, and 2250 by Lockheed-Vega. The last Boeing-built B-17G was delivered on April 13, 1945. B-247 United Airlines 1/48 Scale Model Aircraft

B-247 United Airlines 1/48 Scale Model Aircraft

$127.83

The revolutionary Boeing 247, developed in 1933, was an all-metal, twin engine airplane and the first modern passenger airliner. It had a gyro panel for instrument flying, an autopilot, pneumatically operated de-icing equipment, a variable-pitch propeller and retractable landing gear. It also featured thick upholstered chairs, an insulated cabin, a lavatory and individual overhead lighting. The phenomenon of the Model 247 caught the attention of Americas young airline companies. When its commitment to United prevented Boeing from filling orders fast enough, Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA) turned to Douglas. Douglas offered to build something similar to the Boeing 247, only faster and larger. TWA quickly accepted the proposal. The Douglas DC-1 which was eventually refined as the legendary DC-3, immediately attracted new customers. Thus, making the 247 obsolete less than a year after its first flight. Seventy-five 247s were built. Boeing Air Transport flew 60 247s. United Aircraft Corporation flew 10 and the rest went to Deutsche Lufthansa and a private owner in China. The Boeing 247s remained in airline service until World War II, when several were converted into C-73 transports and trainers. Some were still flying along with the Douglas DC-2 that supplanted it, the Model 247 ushered in the age of speed, reliability, safety and comfort in air travel. Dimensions: 12.325 L x 7 W x 3.96 H

The Boeing 737 is a popular short-to-medium range, single aisle, narrow body commercial passenger jet aircraft. It has been continuously manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes since 1967. More commonly known to the Boeing engineers as FLUF , being an acronym for Fat Little Ugly Fella , although the industry affectionately called it the Baby Boeing . It incorporates a CFMI CFM56-7 engine. The 737-800 has a typical cruising speed of 0.785 Mach and a maximum range of 3,060 nautical miles. The 737-800, together with the 737-900 are among the largest members of the strong selling 737 family. The 737-800 was launched on September 5, 1994. The 737-800 has a flight crew of two. The 737-800 has a typical two class seating for 162 with 12 first class passengers at four abreast. It incorporates two CFM56-7B27s on high gross weight versions. By October 2002, there were 1,028 737-800s ordered with deliveries of 664. With over 7,000 ordered and over 5,000 delivered, the Boeing 737 is the most ordered and produced commercial passenger jet of all time. Born out of Boeings need to introduce a competitor in the short-range, small capacity jetliner market, it has been continuously manufactured since 1967. It is now so widely used that at any given time, there are over 1,250 airborne worldwide. On average, a 737 takes off or lands every five seconds somewhere around the world. Boeing was far behind its competitors when the 737 was launched, as rival aircraft were already into flight certification. To speed up the development time, Boeing reused 60 percent of the structure and systems of the existing 707, most notably the fuselage cross section. The 737-800 was a stretched version of the 737-700. It filled the gap left by Boeings discontinuation of the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 and MD-90 after the two companys merger. B767-400 Delta Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

B767-400 Delta Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

$162.19

B767-400 Delta Boeing is a stretched development of the popular 767-300ER, designed to replace early A300, A310 and 767 twins used on transcontinental services and DC-10-30s and L-1011 trijets used for intercontinental work. It competes with the A330-200. Compared to the 767-300, the 767-400ERs wing features 2.34m (7ft. 8in.) long raked wingtips which improve aerodynamic efficiency. Winglets were originally considered but the wingtip extensions proved more efficient. The wing is actually made from increased gauge aluminum with thicker spars. The B767-400 Delta Boeing features a 777 style advanced flight deck with six color multifunction displays, which can present information in the same format as earlier 767s, allowing a common type certificate. The all new passenger interior is similar to that in the 777. Other features include common engines with the 767-300, a new APU, new tailskid and increased weights. The 767 sold very well in from late 1980s to the late 1990s, with a decrease during the recession in the early 1990s. After strong sales in 1997, sales have declined significantly, due to the economic recession of the early 2000s, increased competition from Airbus, and the recent emergence of a direct replacement program, the Boeing 787. Boeing has kept the line open due to the KC-767 tanker program, which use the 767 airframe. The Boeing 767-400 Delta Boeing is the final extended variant that was launched in 1997 on an order for Delta Air Lines and Continental Airlines to replace their aging Lockheed L-1011 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 fleets. Orders were also placed by Kenya Airways and ILFC but these were eventually canceled. It was again stretched 21.1 ft. for a total of 201.4 ft. It also saw a wingspan increase of 14.3 feet over the previous two variants and is the only 767 variant to also feature raked wingtips, which increase fuel efficiency. It was introduced into service in 2000. Dimensions: 24 L x 8 W x 6.82 H

C-124C Globemaster 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

C-124C Globemaster 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

$126.63

The Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, also known as Old Shakey , was a heavy-lift cargo military aircraft manufactured by the Douglas Aircraft Company in Long Beach, California. C-124s provided heavy airlift during the Korean War, Southeast Asia War and other important airlifts such as re-supply missions to Antarctica, refugee evacuation in the Congo and mercy flights to Morocco, Chile and elsewhere throughout the world following floods and other natural disasters. It could lift 33,560 kilograms (74,000 pounds) of cargo. Its double-decked cabin could also be fitted with 200 seats for troops, or with 123 litters for casualty evacuation. Flight crew was six. The C-124 first flew on November 27, 1949. This C-124C variant of Globemaster was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Corporation at Long Beach, California, and delivered to the U.S. Air Force on May 4, 1955. The aircraft was assigned to the 15th Air Transport Squadron (Heavy) of the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) operating out of Dover AFB, Delaware. The C-124C featured uprated engines, an APS-42 weather radar with a distinctive nose thimble radome, and wingtip-mounted combustion heaters to provide cabin heating and wing de-icing. The radar and combustion heaters were retrofitted to most C-124As. At the types peak in 1963, there were 377 C-124s in service with 20 transport squadrons. A total of 243 C-124C were built. Dimensions: 15.5 L x 19 W x 7 H

C-130 Hercules Gunship 1/84 Scale Model Aircraft

C-130 Hercules Gunship 1/84 Scale Model Aircraft

$137.99

The C-130 Hercules Gunship has the record for being the heaviest and biggest aircraft to land on an aircraft carrier. When the Korean War started in June 1950 it illustrated that the performance of some transport aircrafts like the C-119 Flying Boxcars and C-46 Commandos were insufficient. On February 2, 1951, the United States Air Force released a General Operating Requirement for a new transport aircraft. It was issued to aircraft companies like Boeing, Fairchild, North American, Northrop, Lockheed, Martin Company and Airlifts Incorporated. The transport aircraft would be capable of accommodating 92 passengers or 64 paratroopers, could fly with one engine stopped, and could reach a range of 1100 nautical miles. The Martin Company, Fairchild, Northrop and North American refused to join. The companies who agreed proposed nine designs. The Lockheed submitted two designs, Boeing submitted one, Douglas submitted three and the Airlifts Incorporated submitted one. The design proposals were a tight fight between the Lockheed Company and the Douglas. A 130 page proposal for Lockheed L-206 was submitted by the Lockheed team that was led by Willis Hawkins. The president and chief engineer of Lockheed, Hall Hibbard, noticed the proposal and gave it to Kelly Johnson. Hall Hibbard and Kelly Johnson signed the proposal and got the contract designated Model 82 on July 2, 1951. On August 23, 1954, the YC-130 prototype made its first flight from the Lockheed plant in California. Its serial number was 53-3397 and it was the second prototype but the first to fly. Stanley Beltz and Roy Wimmer were the pilots of the prototype and Jack Real and Dick Stanton were the flight engineers. Dimensions: 14 L x 17 W x 7 H

 C-141B Starlifter (E-1) 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

C-141B Starlifter (E-1) 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

$132.49

After the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy, his first official act was the ordering of the development of an all-jet transport to extend the reach of US military forces. The new aircraft was to replace slower piston-engine cargo planes such as the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II. The Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was the result of this requirement. It served with the United States Air Force (USAF) as a military strategic airlifter and first flew in 1963. It was the first jet aircraft designed to meet military standards as a troop and cargo carrier. Operated by the Air Mobility Command (AMC) of the USAF, the C-141 can airlift and airdrop equipment, supplies and paratroops, whether at low or high altitudes. A total of 285 planes have been built, 284 for the Air Force and one for NASA. The Starlifter, which was designed to meet both military and civilian airworthiness standards, was the workhorse of the AMC. It fulfilled a vast array of requirements, including airlifting combat forces over long distances, re-supplying employed forces and providing rapid transfer of the sick and wounded from remote areas overseas to hospitals in the United States. The C-141 had an all-weather landing system, pressurized cabin and crew station. Rollers in the aircraft floor allowed quick and easy cargo pallet loading. When palletized cargo was not being carried, the rollers could be turned over to leave a smooth, flat surface for loading vehicles. Later on, it was discovered that the Starlifters volume capacity was relatively low in comparison to its lifting capacity, generally running out of physical space long before it reached its weight limit. To correct the deficiencies and utilize the aircraft to the fullest of its capabilities, 270 C-141As were stretched by about one third, adding needed payload volume. The new variant was designated C-141B. Increasing the aircrafts cargo capacity was the equivalent of buying 90 new planes. The C-141B also had in-flight refueling capability, whi

C-54 Skymaster 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

C-54 Skymaster 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

$159.1

The Douglas C-54 Skymaster was a four-engined transport aircraft used by the United States Army Air Forces in World War II. Like the C-47 Skytrain, the C-54 Skymaster was derived from a civilian airliner (the Douglas DC-4). C-54s began service with the Army Air Forces in 1942, carrying up to 26 passengers. (Later versions carried up to 50 passengers.). The U.S. Navy also acquired the type, under the designation R5D. The C-54 was one of the most commonly used transports by the U.S. armed forces in World War II. 515 C-54s were manufactured in Santa Monica, CA and 655 were manufactured in Chicago, Illinois. After World War II, the C-54 continued to serve as the primary airlifter of the new United States Air Force. The USAF Strategic Air Command had C-54 Skymasters in service from 1946 through 1975. President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947, which created the U.S. Air Force, on board Sacred Cow , the Presidential C-54 which is preserved at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. More than 300 C-54s and R5Ds formed the backbone of the Berlin Airlift in 1948. They also served as the main airlift during the Korean War. After the Korean War, the C-54 was replaced by the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, but continued to be used by the U.S. Air Force until 1972. The C-54 was the personal aircraft of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, and Winston Churchill (along with an Avro York). The C-54 was also used by the Royal Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, the Arme de lAir, and the armed forces of twelve other nations. Dimensions: 15.7 L x 17 W x 7 H

C-5A/B Galaxy (Gray) 1/150 Scale Model Aircraft

C-5A/B Galaxy (Gray) 1/150 Scale Model Aircraft

$120.13

The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is a military transport aircraft, the largest in the American military and one of the largest in the world. It was designed to carry outsize and oversize cargo, providing strategic heavy airlift over intercontinental distances. Operated by the United States Air Force (USAF), it is one of the physically largest aircraft in the world that is capable of flying on a regular basis. In 1964, design proposals for a heavy jet transport were submitted by various companies in response to a US Army requirement. The new aircraft was set to replace the Douglas C-133 Cargomaster and complement the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter. In 1965, Lockheeds aircraft design and General Electrics engine design were selected. The first C-5A Galaxy rolled out of the manufacturing plant on March 2, 1968 and the aircrafts maiden flight was on June 30. The first operational Galaxy was delivered in June 1970. The C-5 has a distinctive high T-tail and is similar in appearance to its smaller sister transport the C-141. It is equipped for aerial refueling, giving it an extended range. Nose and aft doors permit drive-through loading and unloading of cargo. The Galaxy is capable of carrying nearly all of the Armys combat equipment, including the 74-ton armored vehicle launched bridge, from the United States to any location in the world. In the early 1970s, the C-5 was considered by NASA for the role of Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, which was tasked to transport the Space Shuttle to Kennedy Space Center. The Boeing 747 was chosen instead, however, due in part to its low-wing design. From 1981 to 1987, 77 C-5As underwent a re-winging program to increase their lifting capability and service life after wing cracks were found throughout the fleet. The redesigned wings were made of a new aluminum alloy that did not exist during the original production. Dimensions: 20 L x 18 W x 7 H

 D-558-1 Skystreak 1/32 Scale Model

D-558-1 Skystreak 1/32 Scale Model

$147.17

The Douglas Skystreak (D-558-1) was designed in 1945 by the Douglas Aircraft Company for the US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics, in conjunction with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The Skystreak was a turbojet powered aircraft that took off from the ground under its own power and had straight wings and tails. The D-558-1 reached Mach 0.99 in level flight, but only flew supersonic in a dive. In the publics mind, much of the research performed by the D-558-1 was quickly overshadowed by Chuck Yeager and the supersonic X-1 rocket plane. However, the Skystreak played an important role in aeronautical research by flying for extended periods of time at transonic speeds, which freed the X-1 to fly for limited periods at supersonic speeds. DC-10-30 Northwest Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

DC-10-30 Northwest Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

$172.91

The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 is an American three-engine medium- to long-range widebody airliner, with two engines mounted on under wing pylons and a third engine at the base of the vertical stabilizer. The model was a successor to the companys DC-8 for long-range operations, and competed in the same markets as the Airbus A300, Boeing 747, and Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, which has a similar layout to the DC-10. Production of the DC-10 ended in December 1988 with 386 delivered to airlines and 60 to the U.S. Air Force as air-to-air refueling tankers, designated the KC-10 Extender. The DC-10 was succeeded by the related McDonnell Douglas MD-11 that entered service in 1990. The DC-10-30 was the most common model variant of the DC-10. It was the second long-range model after the -40 and was very popular with European flag carriers. The DC-10-30 was produced from 1972 to 1988 and was delivered to 38 different customers, including Lufthansa, Swissair, VARIG, KLM and Iberia. Its maiden flight was August 29, 1970. The intercontinental range DC-10-30 introduced more powerful engines, additional fuel tanks and a third main undercarriage unit. The DC-10-30 incorporates three 218kN CF6-50As, 226.9kN CF6-50Cs or 233.5kN CF6-50C1s or C2s or 240.2kN CF6-50C2Bs. The DC-10-30 has a maximum cruising speed of 982 km/h and a range of 7,505 km with max payload. DC-10-30 (164 built) was the most common model built with General Electric CF6-50 turbofan engines and larger fuel tanks to increase range and fuel efficiency, as well as a set of rear center landing gear to support the increased weight. It was the second long-range model after the -40 and very popular with European flag carriers. The primary users of the DC-10-30 are FedEx, Omni Air International, Arrow Air and Gemini Air Cargo. Biman Bangladesh Airlines operates five DC-10-30s as one of their primary passenger aircraft. Dimensions: 21.5 L x 8 W x 7.7 H

DC-3 American Airlines 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

DC-3 American Airlines 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

$112.43

The Douglas DC-3, first flew on December 17, 1935, is a fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft whose speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Many names and numbers were assigned to the DC-3. England labeled it the Dakota or Dak. American pilots, during World War II, called it the Skytrain, Skytrooper, Doug, or Gooney Bird. The U.S. militarys official titles were C-47, C-53, C-117, and R4D. The airlines called it The Three. Of all the names the affectionate title Gooney Bird lingers on. The D-13 had a lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II. It was generally regarded as one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. The D-3 was intended at the height of the depression and in the infancy of the Airline Industry by Douglas Aircraft Company. It carried 34 passengers in more comfort than previous airliners. D-3, a much faster, more efficient and safer airplane, was purchased by many airlines all around the world. Production was diverted during World War II to the C-47 military version and many civilian airliners were converted to the military requirements for use during the war. After the war, most of the DC-3s and C-47s were returned to civilian and commercial use and others were sold to allied air forces around the world. The DC-3 once again was carrying paid passengers and was still in service carrying passengers in the 1970s with a few airlines. Today the DC-3s are relegated to aircraft museums, graveyards and occasionally a charter outfit still carrying cargo in them. Dimensions: 11 L x 6 W x 2.75 H

DC-3 Delta Airlines 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

DC-3 Delta Airlines 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

$112.43

The Douglas DC-3 is a fixed wing, propeller-driven aircraft and is generally considered one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. The DC3s maiden fight was on December 17, 1935. DC3s were drafted for the war effort and nearly 10,000 military versions were built during World War II and were designated as C-47, C-53, R4D and Dakota. The DC-3 and its military variants were used by the Armed Forces for the transport of troops, cargo and wounded. Both Delta and Continental Airlines operate DC-3s. It was also used to fly at air shows and has been used in various movies. Thousands of surplus C-47s were converted to civil service. The DC-3 became standard equipment of most of the worlds airlines and it remained in front-line service for many years. The DC-3 has a maximum speed of 237 mph and a range of 1,025 mi. There were 10,655 DC-3s built at Santa Monica, California and Long Beach, California, both in civil and military versions. In 1998, there were over 400 DC-3s in commercial service. Dimensions: 11 L x 6 W x 2.64 H

DC-3 Eastern Airlines 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

DC-3 Eastern Airlines 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

$122.92

The DC-3 Eastern Douglas is a fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft whose speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. The DC-3 Eastern Douglas was engineered by a team led by Chief Engineer Arthur E. Raymond, and first flew on December 17, 1935 (the 32nd anniversary of the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk). The aircraft was the result of a marathon phone call from American Airlines CEO Cyrus Smith to Donald Douglas requesting the design of an improved successor to the DC-2. The amenities of the DC-3 Eastern Douglas (including sleeping berths on early DST — Douglas Sleeper Transport — models and an in-flight kitchen) popularized air travel in the United States. With only three refueling stops, eastbound transcontinental flights across America taking approximately 15 hours became possible. Westbound trips took 17 hours 30 minutes due to typical prevailing headwinds – still a significant improvement over the competing Boeing 247. Before the arrival of the DC-3, such a trip would entail short hops in commuter aircraft, during the day, coupled with train travel overnight. Because of its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II, DC-3 Eastern Douglas is generally regarded as one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. Dimensions: 11 L x 6 W x 2.64 H

DC-6B/C American Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

DC-6B/C American Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

$114.55

Originally a response to a military airlift requirement near the end of World War II, the Douglas DC-6 was reworked after the war to compete with the Lockheed Constellation in the long-range transport class. Built between 1946 to 1959, the DC-6 became Douglas most successful four-engine piston airliner. More than 700 aircraft have been produced, and many still fly today in cargo, military and wildfire control roles. During World War II, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) was impressed with the C-54 Skymasters long range and payload capabilities, and thus commissioned the XC-112 project in 1944. The USAAF wanted an expanded, pressurized version of the popular C-54 with improved engines. However, by the time the XC-112 flew, the war had ended, and the USAAF requirement no longer stood. Douglas continued development nevertheless, converting the XC-112 into a civil transport which became the DC-6. The first production aircraft was delivered in March 1947. Douglas designed four basic variants of the DC-6. The DC-6A was optimized for freight work, while the equivalent passenger version was the DC-6B. The DC-6C was a convertible passenger/freight model. Military versions, many of which ended up in civilian hands later on, were designated C-118 under the Air Force and R6D1 under the Navy. American Airlines (AA), the worlds largest airline in terms of total passengers-miles transported and fleet size, operated the DC-6 from the 1940s until 1966. The aircraft was AAs answer to the Constellations of Trans World Airlines. The DC-6 proved to be an outstanding aircraft and was the backbone of AAs fleet in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was the last piston-powered aircraft used by the airline. Dimensions: 12.75 L x 6 W x 2.75 H

DC-8-71/73 United Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

DC-8-71/73 United Airlines 1/100 Scale Model Aircraft

$155.48

The DC-8 is a medium to long range airliner manufactured by McDonnell Douglas between 1959 and 1972. It first flew on May 30, 1958 in front of over 95,000 employees and spectators and flew for 2 Hours and 7 Minutes on the initial flight. The next test flight occurred on June 4, 1958 and between June and late August Ship One accumulated 72 hours of in-flight testing in a total of 22 flights. After a decade, the DC-8 established commercial transport world records for speed, altitude, distance and payload. As fuel efficiency and noise concerns became more important during the 1970s, many of these later models were equipped with new advanced turbofan engines and re-designated as the Super 71, Super 72, and Super 73, respectively. The DC-8-71 version is similar to the Boeing 707 in performance and payload. The 71 model made its first flight in April 1982. While the DC-8-73 version was used in secret missions by the CIAs Air America program until it was disbanded in 1975. The planes look is kept simple to resemble cargo aircraft so as not to arouse suspicion. The DC-8-73 version of the DC-8 made its first flight on March 4, 1982. United Air Lines was considered the largest supporter and customer for the DC-8 from the very beginning, with their order of the DC-8-11, to the end, with the conversion of their fleet of DC-8-61s into DC-8-71s. Today, however, nearly all of the DC-8 Seventy aircraft have been converted into freighters and United Parcel Service now has the largest fleet of DC-8s with a total of 49 DC-8-71s & DC-8-73s.
