Developmental Immunotoxicology

Developmental Immunotoxicology

$159.95

Despite rapidly increasing interest in developmental immunotoxicology, there is not yet a textbook focused on this hot area of research. Developmental Immunotoxicology fills the void with overviews of immune system development in experimental animal and human models, and discusses the complex issues related to the evolution of developmental immunology and risk assessment. This text describes different models used to study developmental immunotoxicology and examples of specific developmental immunotoxic agents, including therapeutics. The text concludes with several chapters that describe the role of neuroimmune interactions as they relate to developmental immunotoxicology. Using a didactic approach, Developmental Immunotoxicology provides an explanatory overview of this cutting-edge field for toxicologists, immunologists, and developmental biologists. It provides a lucid account of this area of research-proposing answers to some questions and stimulating debate on those questions yet to be addressed by the research community.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Developmental psychopathology is the study of the development of psychological disorders, such as psychopathy, autism, schizophrenia and depression, with a lifecourse perspective. Developmental psychopathology is a subfield of developmental psychology characterized by the following (noncomprehensive) list of assumptions: 1. Atypical development and typical development are mutually informative. Therefore, developmental psychopathology is not the study of pathological development, but the study of the basic mechanisms that cause developmental pathways to diverge toward pathological or typical outcomes; 2. Development leads to either adaptive or maladaptive outcomes. However, development that is adaptive in one context may be maladaptive in another context; 3. Developmental change is influenced by many variables. Research designs in developmental psychopathology should incorporate multivariate designs to examine the mechanisms underlying development; 4. Development occurs within nested contexts; Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. How do infants and young children coordinate information in real time to arrive at sentence meaning from the words and structure of the sentence and from the nonlinguistic context? This volume introduces readers to an emerging field of research, experimental developmental psycholinguistics , and to the four predominant methodologies used to study on-line language processing in children. Authored by key figures in psycholinguistics, neuroscience and developmental psychology, the chapters cover event-related brain potentials, free-viewing eyetracking, looking-while-listening, and reaction-time techniques, also providing a historical backdrop for this line of research. Multiple aspects of experimental design, data collection and data analysis are addressed in detail, alongside surveys of recent important findings about how infants and children process sounds, words, and sentences. Indispensable for students and researchers working in the areas of language acquisition, developmental psychology and developmental neuroscience of language, this volume will also appeal to speech language pathologists and early childhood educators.

Developmental Neurobiology

Developmental Neurobiology

$155

Developmental Neuroscience is one of the six core disciplines in Neuroscience, and yet no single volume, non-textbook reference exists on the market that provides researchers with more in-depth, high-level information on developmental neurobiology.  Currently, anyone interested in the field at a higher level must sift through review articles published frequently and the more specific handbooks that focus on aspects of development rather than the field as a whole. This reference is the first of its kind to fill this need. It pulls together the relevant articles on the topic from the 10-volume Encyclopedia of Neuroscience (Academic Press, 2008) and serves as an affordable and immediate resource for scientists, postdocs, graduate students with an interest beyond the basic textbook materials on the subject. Impact The first and only comprehensive affordable single volume reference for Developmental Neuroscience, one of the core disciplines in both, Neuroscience and Developmental Biology Scope chapters cover topics ranging from cell fate determination, pathfinding, synapse generation, neural stem cells, to neurodegeneration and regeneration, carefully selected from the Encyclopedia of Neuroscience by one of the great developmental neuroscientists, Greg Lemke, The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, San Diego. Expertise The best researchers in the field provide their conclusions in the context of the latest experimental results.

Each chapter features an introduction, up-to-date overviews of the field, summary and conclusion, and numerous classical and contemporary references. The book opens with an overview of developmental science – its history and theory, the cultural orientation to thinking about human development, and the manner in which empirical research is designed, conducted, and analyzed. Part 2 of this book focuses on the field's major substantive areas – neuroscience and genetics, physical and motor development, perception, and cognitive and language development. Part 3 examines personality and social development within the context of the various relationships and situations in which developing individuals function and by which they are shaped. The book concludes with a new chapter on the latest applications of developmental science. Ways in which developmental thinking and research affect and are affected by practice and social policy are particularly emphasized. The field covers all phases of ontogeny, with particular emphasis on prenatal, perinatal and early childhood development. Conducting research into basic aspects of development, for example, the development of infant attachment, sleep, eating, thermoregulation, learning and attention, occupies most developmental psychobiologists. At the same time, they are actively engaged in research on applied problems such as sudden infant death syndrome, the development and care of the preterm infant, autism, and the effects of various prenatal insults (e.g., maternal stress, alcohol exposure) on the development of brain and behavior. Developmental Editing

Developmental Editing

$22.5

Editing is a tricky business. It requires analytical flair and creative panache, the patience of a saint and the vision of a writer. Transforming a manuscript into a book that edifies, inspires, and sells? That’s the job of the developmental editor, whose desk is the first stop for many manuscripts on the road to bookdom—a route ably mapped out in the pages of Developmental Editing . Author Scott Norton has worked with a diverse range of authors, editors, and publishers, and his handbook provides an approach to developmental editing that is logical, collaborative, humorous, and realistic. He starts with the core tasks of shaping the proposal, finding the hook, and building the narrative or argument, and then turns to the hard work of executing the plan and establishing a style. Developmental Editing includes detailed case studies featuring a variety of nonfiction books—election-year polemic, popular science, memoir, travel guide—and authors ranging from first-timer to veteran, journalist to scholar. Handy sidebars offer advice on how to become a developmental editor, create effective illustration programs, and adapt sophisticated fiction techniques (such as point of view, suspense, plotting, character, and setting) to nonfiction writing.   Norton’s book also provides freelance copyeditors with a way to earn higher fees while introducing more creativity into their work lives. It gives acquisitions, marketing, and production staff a vocabulary for diagnosing a manuscript’s flaws and techniques for transforming it into a bestseller. And perhaps most importantly, Developmental Editing equips authors with the concrete tools they need to reach their audiences.

Here are more than fifty entertaining activities to enjoy with very young children, with instructions for making the toys needed for play. Baby and Toddler Learning Fun also provides smart tips for enriching the home environment in other ways for baby's learning. As children grow, the activities can be easily adapted so they remain as much fun for a toddler as for an infant. It's quick and inexpensive to make the toys out of the stuff infants and toddlers already enjoy looking at or handling-plastic containers, stiff paper, brightly colored scraps of material, and other household items. This hands-on book not only helps parents teach babies important concepts about colors, shapes, letters, and numbers, but also brings parent and child closer through engaging playtimes. The activities aren't to be used as drills but rather as part of dynamic play that parent and child will enjoy. Charts help parents keep track of concepts as they are introduced. Evolutionary Developmental Biology

Evolutionary Developmental Biology

$152.95

Evolutionary developmental biology is a field of biology that compares the developmental processes of different animals and plants in an attempt to determine the ancestral relationship between organisms and how developmental processes evolved. It addresses the origin and evolution of embryonic development; how modifications of development and developmental processes lead to the production of novel features, such as the evolution of feathers; the role of developmental plasticity in evolution; how ecology impacts in development and evolutionary change; and the developmental basis of homoplasy and homology. Although interest in the relationship between ontogeny and phylogeny extends back to the nineteenth century, the contemporary field of evodevo has gained impetus from the discovery of genes regulating embryonic development in model organisms. General hypotheses remain hard to test because organisms differ so much in shape and form. Nevertheless, it now appears that just as evolution tends to create new genes from parts of old genes (molecular economy), evodevo demonstrates that evolution alters developmental processes (genes and gene networks) to create new and novel structures from the old gene networks (such as bone structures of the jaw deviating to the ossicles of the middle ear) or will conserve (molecular economy) a similar program in a host of organisms such as eye development genes in molluscs, insects, and vertebrates. Initially the major interest has been in the evidence of homology in the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate body plan and organ development. However more modern approaches include developmental changes associated with speciation. The volume sheds light on how complex social abilities emerge from basic brain circuits, whether there are elements of social behavior that are ‘hard wired’ in the brain, and the impact of early experiences. Illustrations include 8 color plates.

Developmental Neurotoxicology Research

Developmental Neurotoxicology Research

$158

This book describes how systems biology, pharmacogenomic and behavioral approaches, as applied to neurodevelopmental toxicology, provide a structure to arrange information in a biological model. Authors review and discuss approaches that can be used as effective tools to dissect mechanisms underlying pharmacological and toxicological phenomena associated with the exposure to drugs or environmental toxicants during development. This book presents cross-cutting research tools and animal models, along with applications to the studies associated with potential anesthetic-induced developmental neurotoxicity; the developmental basis of adolescent or adult onset of disease; risk assessment of methyl mercury and its effects on neurodevelopment; challenges in the field to identify environmental factors of relevance to autism; and the strategy and progress of epilepsy research.

 Behind the Open Door

Behind the Open Door

$18.24

Behind the Open Door airs the dirty laundry as it is practiced behind closed doors in the community college-especially the contrived rationalizations faculty use to foster the mis-education of minority students and to deny minorities teaching positions. They have become the gatekeepers in the college, the college controllers who know little about the students with whom they work. The scant presence of Asian, Hispanic, and African-American teachers in community colleges is due to intent, not oversight. It is clear that in the two-year college race is a difference that makes a difference. It is confirmed in the volume that those who control community colleges are baby boomers. The baby boomers’ attitudes about people, things and ideas in the college were shaped by their lower-class parents and grandparents who lived during a time of incessant social agitation (1900-1940). From these people the baby boomers learned who to value and who to disregard. With this type of guidance they were programmed for the roles they would later play in their professional lives, some of which were out of sync with the stated egalitarian principles of the community college. They became conservative and resistant to change. This was especially true after they became interested in collective bargaining. As they gained power they made the institution teacher centered. This change affected all aspects of the college. The baby boomers have not been very successful with developmental education students and often blame the students for their own lack of achievement. They insist the students are without motivation, have low self-esteem, are of low intelligence, and their parents have no higher educationexperience. The teachers are always seeking explanations about cultural and class-based deviations of their students. These assumptions are used to sort and label students. All of this has precipitated the culturally disadvantaged syndrome and the deleterious affect it has had on learning a

This new chronological edition is based on the well-established topically organized text by Bukatko and Daehler, Child Development: A Thematic Approach, 5/e. Addressing physical, social, and emotional development in a linear fashion, this text starts with pre-natal development and progresses through birth and the newborn baby, infancy and toddlerhood, early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. Developed to accommodate the more applied focus of courses in nursing, parenthood, education, family studies, and human ecology, this text benefits from the authors” focus on research through an emphasis on developmental themes.
