Canvas Growth

dealing with mold on art canvas- gesso?
some canvas’s of mine grew some mold colonies on the back,
and while i lysol’d/bleached over where the mold was and left them out in the sun to dry,
the mold is still there (might be dead but its still nasty and colorful),
and i’m wondering if there’s a simple solution,
does anyone know if covering it with gesso would kill anything or prevent growth?
the gesso’d fronts didn’t grow any…
suggestions would be quite welcome and appreciated! –one of the canvas’s already has a painting on it….
Covering up the mold won’t solve the problem–it would probably bleed through. Use Winsor and Neuton cleaner and restorer or Murphy oil soap or pink soap. You can purchase these products at an art or craft store or you might try one of these companies online:

Growth Miracles and Growth Debacles $40 In this fascinating book, Sambit Bhattacharyya presents a detailed account of the socio-economic processes that create broad variations in living standards across the globe. The author examines the world’s economic history over the last five centuries, replete with growth miracles and growth debacles: growth in Britain was steady, yet China lost her early advantage; North America settler colonies performed significantly better than those of Asia and Africa; Australia and Argentina were notably similar at the start of the twentieth century but delivered strikingly different growth outcomes. The book argues that these differences in growth rate are best explained by an interplay of factors, namely economic, political and geographical. In conclusion it presents long-run comparative growth narratives for Africa, China, India, the Americas, Russia and Western Europe. Presenting a unique and original analytical framework to explain economic growth and decline, and bridging empirical growth literature and economic history, this book will prove a stimulating read for both academic and professional economists, and scholars of economic history and economic growth. Other social scientists including sociologists, political scientists and economic historians will also find the book to be of great value. |

Analysis of Growth $114.71 Unlike the standard crosscountry growth regressions that focus on the long run average growth and hence mask episodes of high and low growth that most of these countries experience, this paper follows the recent literature and examine growth episodes in SSA countries. This new approach applied enable us identify years of growth accelerations and episodes which were sustained over the medium and longterm. More specifically, utilizing the Penn World Data Tables (version 6.2), the study follows the diagnostic or twopronged strategy of Rodrik (2005a and 2005b), which focuses on the particular constraints that prevent a given country from growing faster. In the latter part, we analyze the impact of growth on income poverty and inequality in selected countries drawing on available household survey data published by the World Bank in its Global Poverty Monitoring Database. To establish correlation between growth episodes(all accelerations and sustained ones) and policy variables, institutional variables and geographic factors, we estimate alternative limited dependant variable models. The results show that variables affect these two growth episodes differently. The Growth Illusion $14.57 Short-listed for 1992 GPA Award. Is economic growth improving our lives? In 1992, when the first edition of The Growth Illusion appeared, most people had little doubt that the answer was ‘Yes’. Today, however, the climate of opinion has changed and there is widespread acceptance that, while growth might be necessary to generate jobs, the development path we are following isn’t making life better for ourselves or our children. This new, revised edition of The Growth Illusion explains what has gone wrong. Douthwaite argues that since the 1950s, governments around the world have made economic growth their primary focus in the belief that by baking the biggest national cake, they are creating the resources needed to fulfill their political goals. Recent research in the USA, Britain, Germany and Australia shows that this ‘growth first, goals later’ strategy isn’t working and that in the past fifteen years the growth process has actually destroyed more resources than it has created on a sustainable basis. As these economies run backwards, their citizens become worse off. So why is growth still paramount? Like an aircraft maintaining a minimum airspeed to stay aloft, so an economy must maintain a minimum growth rate if it is not to plunge into a deep depression. If demand fails to increase in any year, less investment will be made the following year, people will be thrown out of work and the economy will begin to unwind. The Growth Illusion explores this trap and many other topics along the way, asking fundamental questions about economics and the society in which we live. In this revised and reworked edition, case studies and statistics have been brought up to date and amplified by new research. Douthwaite identifies recent changes in public attitudes to growth as the beginnings of an intellectual revolution as far-reaching in its consequences for human survival as those initiated by Copernicus or Darwin in their re-assessment of man’s place in creation. ‘Growth has pushed the economic system beyond safe environmental limits,’ he writes. ‘The present revolution involves our acceptance that Earth is finite and the laws of nature apply to us.’ Press comments about The Growth Illusion: ‘Truly a book for our times: a fierce and unrelenting critique of the failures of laissez-faire capitalism … I commend The Growth Illusion to all.’- The Sunday Tribune — ‘Here’s an economist who can entertain, blowing the whistle on consumer idiocies … After reading Douthwaite’s vivid and convincing case studies it becomes impossible to hear a politician promising ‘recovery’ … without feeling mingled pity and contempt’ — The Independent on Sunday — “The Growth Illusion is simply indispensable for those who wish to empower themselves by getting a grip on an alternative model to the prevailing economics of misery. What is particularly impressive is the quality of the scholarship… The publication of this book is a very significant act in democratizing economi |

Volatility and Growth $53 It has long been recognized that productivity growth and the business cycle are closely interrelated. Yet, until recently, the two phenomena have been investigated separately in the economics literature. This book provides the first consistent attempt to analyze the effects of macroeconomic volatility on productivity growth, and also the reverse causality from growth to business cycles. The authors show that by looking at the economy through the lens of private entrepreneurs, whoinvest under credit constraints, one can go some way towards explaining persistent macroeconomic volatility and the effects of volatility on growth. Beginning with an analysis of the effects of volatility on growth, the authors argue that the lower the level of financial development in a country the more detrimental the effect of volatility on growth. This prediction is confirmed by cross-country panel regressions. The data also suggests that a fixed exchange rate regime or more countercyclical budgetary policies are growth-enhancing in countries with a lower level of financial development. The former reduce aggregate volatility whereas thelatter reduce the negative effects of volatility on long-term productivity-enhancing investment by firms. The book concludes with an investigation into how the interplay between credit constraints and pecuniary externalities is sufficient to generate persistent business cycles and to explain the occurrence of currency crises. |

Health and Growth $29.99 This book containes a series of “state of the art” essays on topics related to health and growth. The Commission on Growth and Development (CGD)–in preparing its own Growth Report–wished to take stock of the current state of knowledge and understanding of economic growth, and thus commissioned a series of essays on a range of thematic areas. One such area is health. The following questions are discussed in the book:Does investing in health raise economic growth? Can governments achieve rapid growth or high incomes without investing in health? What are the options and benefits of different analytic approaches to measuring the causal link between health and growth? Have medical advances influenced life expectancy levels? Do health investments lead to higher individual productivity? Why are investment in early childhood development and nutrition important? How do governments invest in improving health status? Why do all governments invest in health care services? Where should governments invest in health to improve the welfare and health status of the population? What are the pitfalls in public health care provision and finance? How can public investments raise health status and household productivity? |

Leadership and Growth $29.99 The book reviews Nigeria’s growth performance and its impact on the labor market and proposes a growth strategy aimed at further accelerating growth and enhancing the growth elasticity of employment. The growth strategy rests on three pillars:• Targeted interventions to address binding constraints in value chains with high growth and employment potential. These binding constraints include poor physical infrastructure and investment climate, lack of access to finance, pervasive skills gaps, and restrictive trade policies. Successful interventions in these value chains need to be designed based on an assessment of what is most relevant, feasible, cost-effective and provides the greatest near and medium-term benefits. To be effective, these interventions should emanate from a dialogue with the private sector and allow for swift correction and suitable governance arrangements. • Comprehensive reform of the technical and vocational education system: This will be needed not only to create conditions for more rapid growth, but also to combat youth unemployment. Private sector-led approaches to improved vocational training, where the government plays the role of standardizing curricula and accrediting programs, are the most promising route for reform. • Trade policy reform. Import bans and high tariff barriers substantially increase the cost of doing business in value chains with high employment potential. Further trade liberalization will be essential to allow a restructuring of the economy towards sectors where Nigeria is globally competitive. |

Growth Disorders $241.38 Linear growth is a biological process of fundamental importance to the physical and psychological make-up of a child and adolescent but which can be subject to a number of interruptions and disorders. The management and treatement of patients with growth disorders constitutes a major, and important, part of practice in clinical pediatrics, while in public health terms growth assessment remains one of the most useful indices of health and economic well being in both developed and the developing world. This book approaches growth and its disorders from both a physiological and pathophsyiological standpoint. The book outlines in detail the fundamental biological mechanisms of normal and abnormal linear growth, how to assess growth accurately fundamental to the early detection of abnormatlity and, importantly, how to manage disorders leading to short and tall stature, and disorders of the timing of puberty. Throughout, emphasis is given on achieving a satisfactory outcome for the child and parent by keeping them fully informed as to what is possible from a particular treatment strategy. The result is a wide-ranging and balanced account of this challenging field drawing on the expertise of a team of international specialists from a variety of backgrounds. |

Balanced Growth $89.95 What is balanced growth? This book shows that the definitions and implications of the concept of balanced growth vary significantly among the different disciplines in economic science, but are not exclusive at all. Terms such as sustainability or balanced growth have become buzzwords. In practice, they are often a desirable vision rather than an achievable objective. Why? Doubts may arise about the extent to which such concepts are compatible with a modern market economy. Is balanced growth possible at all? Is it reasonable to accept balanced growth as a norm? Why should a balanced growth path be a desirable strategy to pursue for policymakers, managers, employees, and other societal stakeholders? Empirical evidence suggests that the actual worldwide economic growth is not balanced at all. Meanwhile, ever since the beginning of the financial and economic crisis in 2007 and its accompanying spillover effects, our globalizing world has uncompromisingly shown the flip side of its coin. Its crisis-prone character has intensified the discussion about our economic system's sustainability. Questions related to acceptable sovereign debt levels, suitable trade deficits and surpluses, firms' growth targets, resource management and efficiency have aroused high interest. What is the cause of the observed imbalances? In our opinion, this debate must involve rethinking the qualitative and quantitative dimension of our present understanding of the nature of economic growth. This book accompanies the 9th DocNet Management Symposium of the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. It contains contributions of the symposium's panel speakers, renowned authors to the field and young researchers. The Ph.D. students' and post-doctoral association DocNet organizes the DocNet Management Symposium on a yearly basis with the goal to foster exchange between academia and practitioners. |

The novel moves at the pace of the passing seasons, and with the growth of the crops, on which the characters’ lives depend. Hamsun’s themes of individual freedom, and the fundamental human need to reconcile man with the natural world, speak even more resonantly now than when the novel was first published. |

Telecommunications and Growth $96.59 Telecommunications infrastructure is recognized as a catalyst for economic growth. The literature has identified how infrastructure contributes to growth, ways that telecommunications specifically contributes, and empirically confirmed a significant, positive bidirectional relationship between telecommunications infrastructure and growth. More recently, the technological innovations in telecommunications in the 90s have sparked a debate about whether these technologies have created a digital divide. This work reviews this underlying theory and the debates surrounding this subject. Data for this analysis include 79 countries for the years 19812000. The model is regressed using ordinary least squares, a paneldata method, and finally it is instrumented to attempt to control for endogeneity. The instruments utilized in this investigation prove to be ineffective. The results of the empirical work confirm that there is a strong relationship between telecommunications and growth; that the technological revolution of the 1990s dramatically strengthened this relationship; and that these benefits are biased towards more developed countries, confirming the existence of a digital divide. Small Firm Growth first discusses the nature of the phenomenon of small firm growth and its relation to entrepreneurship as well as size and age. It then moves on to how growth can best be assessed. Innovation and Growth $67 Innovation is crucial to long-term economic growth, even more so in the aftermath of the financial and economic crisis. In this volume, the OECD and the World Bank jointly take stock of how globalisation is posing new challenges for innovation and growth in both developed and developing countries, and how countries are coping with them. The authors discuss options for policy initiatives that can foster technological innovation in the pursuit of faster and sustainable growth. The various chapters highlight how the emergence of an integrated global market affects the impact of national innovation policy. What seemed like effective innovation strategies ( e.g. policies designed to strengthen the R&D capacity of domestic firms) are no longer sufficient for effective catch-up. The more open and global nature of innovation makes innovation policies more difficult to design and implement at the national scale alone. These challenges are further complicated by new phenomena, such as global value chains and the fragmentation of production, the growing role of global corporations, and the ICT revolution. Where and why a global corporation chooses to anchor its production affects the playing field for OECD and developing economies alike. |

The Growth Map $14.99 In 2001, Jim O’Neill predicted the fastest growing economies of the past decade. Now he’s back to explore the new growth markets we should all be watching closely today. It’s been ten years since Jim O’Neill conceived of the BRIC acronym. He and his team made a startling prediction: Four developing nations- Brazil, Russia, India, and China (the BRICs)-would overtake the six largest Western economies within forty years. The BRIC analysis permanently changed the world of global investing, and its accuracy has stood the test of time. The Growth Map features O’Neill’s personal account of the BRIC phenomenon, how it has evolved, and where those four key nations currently stand after a turbulent decade. And the book also offers an equally bold prediction about the "Next Eleven" countries: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, Turkey, and Vietnam. These developing nations may not seem exceptional today, but they offer exciting opportunities for investors over the next decade, just as BRIC did before them. O’Neill also shares several compelling insights about the world economy. He reveals the value for growing countries in being "willing to play" by meaningfully committing to policies that encourage further growth and engagement with globalization. He explains how the g20 can adjust to better incorporate the BRICs and to better reflect the balance of the global economy. Finally, O’Neill makes the counterintuitive claim that good things can quite often come from crises. While established economic powers may see the rise of the BRICs as a threat, international trade benefits us all over the long term. Likewise, the recent financial crisis revealed deep problems in our economic systems, problems we now have the opportunity to fix. A work of astute and absorbing analysis, The Growth Map is an indispensable guide for every investor and every participant in the global economy. Anyone who wants to understand the developing world would do well to heed the man called "one of the most sought-after economic commentators on the planet." ( The Telegraph ) |

The Limits to Growth $29.95 If you only read one book … make this it!'L. Hunter Lovins, co-author of Natural Capitalism'It is time for the world to re-read Limits to Growth! The message of 1972 is more real and relevant in 2004, and we wasted 30 valuable years of action by misreading the message of the first book' Matthew R. Simmons, founder, Simmons & Company International, the world's largest energy investment banking firm'If you want to understand what's going on Earth, read it.'Patrick Whitefield, PermacultureIn 1972, Limits to Growth shocked the world and forever changed the global agenda by demonstrating that unchecked growth on our finite planet was leading the Earth towards ecological 'overshoot' and pending disaster. The book went on to sell millions of copies and ignited a firestorm of controversy that burns hotter than ever in these days of soaring oil prices, wars for resources and human-induced climate change. This substantially revised, expanded and updated edition follows on from Limits to Growth and its sequel Beyond the Limits, which raised the alarm that we have already overshot the planet's carrying capacity. Marshalling a vast array of new, hard data, more powerful computer modelling and incorporating the latest thinking on sustainability, ecological footprinting and limits, this new book presents future overshoot scenarios and makes an even more urgent case for a rapid readjustment of the global economy toward a sustainable path. This is compelling, essential and, indeed, essential reading for all concerned with our common future. |

Leading for Growth $27.95 How any business leader can create an atmosphere of competitiveness for exceptional growth When Ray Davis took over the local 40-person South Umpqua Bank in 1994, many people in the industry poked fun at his insistence that employees answer the phone with a cheery “World’s Greatest Bank.” Eleven years, $7 billion in assets, and 128 branches (or ” bank stores” in Umpqua lingo) later, the moniker seems quite apt. Other banks scratched their heads when Davis sent his tellers to Ritz-Carlton to learn customer service and were intrigued when he hired a cutting-edge design firm to completely re-think retail layout. Now, with a top design award under their belt, a name change (there never was a North  Umpqua bank), and a completely new definition of the banking business, Umpqua has become the darling of the entrepreneurial press and a growth powerhouse. The New York Times calls Umpqua ” Starbucks with tellers .” Ray Davis (Portland, OR), named by U.S. Banker as one of the 25 most influential people in the financial industry in 2005, is President and CEO of Umpqua Holdings Corporation. Alan Shrader (Moraga, CA) is an experienced writer and editor of business books. |

Community and Growth $22.95 “If you’ve ever thought about community, whether as a lifestyle or simply as an expression of deeper fellowship with others, this book is essential reading. In the fifteen years since it first appeared in English, it has become “the” classic text on the subject — read, dog-eared, borrowed, and discussed.>Vanier is not a rosy idealist. That is because his writing is based not on theories, but on a wealth of wisdom gleaned over many years living in community, experiencing difficult days and joyous celebrations, times of struggle and hard-won success, moments of doubt and inspiration. He acknowledges the inevitable little frustrations of a life lived with and for others, but he also helps the reader see that without struggle there is no true growth.” |

Handbook of Growth and Growth Monitoring in Health and Disease $949 Growth is one of the human body's most intricate processes: each body part or region has its own unique growth patterns. Yet at the individual and population levels, growth patterns are sensitive to adverse conditions, genetic predispositions, and environmental changes. And despite the body's capacity to compensate for these developmental setbacks, the effects may be far-reaching, even life-long. The Handbook of Growth and Growth Monitoring in Health and Disease brings this significant and complex field together in one comprehensive volume: impact of adverse variables on growth patterns; issues at different stages of prenatal development, childhood, and adolescence; aspects of catch-up growth, endocrine regulation, and sexual maturation; screening and assessment methods; and international perspectives. Tables and diagrams, applications to other areas of health and disease, and summary points help make the information easier to retain. Together, these 140 self-contained chapters in 15 sections [ok?] cover every area of human growth, including: Intrauterine growth retardation. Postnatal growth in normal and abnormal situations. Cells and growth of tissues. Sensory growth and development. Effects of disease on growth. Methods and standards for assessment of growth, and more. The Handbook of Growth and Growth Monitoring in Health and Disease is an invaluable addition to the reference libraries of a wide range of health professionals, among them health scientists, physicians, physiologists, nutritionists, dieticians, nurses, public health researchers, epidemiologists, exercise physiologists, and physical therapists. It is also useful to college-level students and faculty in the health disciplines, and to policymakers and health economists. |

Golden Growth $34.99 The public debt crisis in Europe has shaken the confidence not just in the Euro, but in the European model. Aging and uneconomical Europeans are being squeezed between innovative Americans and efficient Asians, it is said. With debt and demographics dragging down them down, one hears that European economies will not grow much unless radically new ways are discovered. The end of complacency in Europe is a good thing, but this loss of confidence could be dangerous. The danger is that in a rush to rejuvenate growth, the attractive attributes of the European development model could be abandoned along with the weak. In fact, the European growth model has many strong points and enviable accomplishments. One can say without exaggeration that Europe had invented a “convergence machine”, taking in poor countries and helping them become high income economies. World Bank research has identified 27 countries that have grown from middle-income to high income since 1987: a few thanks to the discovery and exploitation of massive natural resources (e.g.: oil in Oman and Trinidad and Tobago), several others like Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea, embracing aggressive export-led strategies which involved working and saving a lot, postponing political liberties, and looking out only for themselves. But half of the countries that have grown from middle income to high income—Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, and Slovenia—are actually in Europe. This is why the European model was so attractive and unique, and why with some well designed efforts it ought to be made right again. |

The Growth Report: Strategies For Sustained Growth And Inclusive Development $11.89 Why have only 13 developing world economies achieved sustained, high growth since World War II? Why is engagement with the global economy necessary to achieve high growth? Why do some countries' growth strategies fail to win the public's confidence? Why are equity and equality of opportunity important components of successful growth strategies? Why do many countries, blessed with natural resource wealth, not achieve high growth? Why has no country ever sustained rapid growth without high rates of public investment? Why does it not always pay to devalue the exchange rate? When does it? Why is childhood nutrition so important to economic growth? Why do some economies lose momentum when others keep on growing? Why has no country ever sustained long-term growth without urbanizing? Why should there be an end to energy subsidies? Why do global warming and the rising prices of food, energy and minerals pose challenges to potential future growth in developing countries? Why does the aging of the world population matter for developing countries growth and employment prospects? The Growth Report does not have all the answers, but it does identify some of the key insights and policy levers to help countries achieve high, sustainable and inclusive growth. The result of two years work by 19 experienced policymakers and two Nobel prize-winning economists, the Growth Report is the most complete analysis to date of the ingredients which, if used in the right country-specific recipe, can deliver growth and help lift populations out of poverty. |

A Treasonable Growth $18.94 A Treasonable Growth was Ronald Blythe’s was first book and only novel. It is set in Aldeburgh, Suffolk shortly before the Second World War. Ronald Blythe himself has described it as his ‘Forsterian novel’ and even admits to going for walks with E. M. Forster while working on the novel ‘although I never mentioned it.’ Freda Bellingham, the founder of Copdock School, ensnares the unsuspecting Richard Brand in order to save her ramshackle foundation. At twenty-four, Richard is that perilous mixture, gauche, good and uncommitted. He falls straight into the morass of Copdock School. The time is just before the Second World War and already the less daring British exiles in Italy are planning to return home. Among them is the celebrated novelist, Sir Paul Abott, the nephew of Freda Bellingham. He quits his Sicilian villa for Suffolk and, like his aunt, decides he must have new blood. He needs someone, ‘call it an amanuensis,’ someone ‘more than a typist and less than a friend.’ In full flight from Freda Bellingham and Sir Paul Abbott, Richard joins forces with Mary Crawford, a marriage dreamer. But lovers should be strangers first and uncommitted by too close a knowledge of each other. At this point the aged hunters of these perplexed lovers should have moved in for the kill, but even their egocentricity had to bow before the larger madness which was to shatter their little world. |

Gatekeepers of Growth $37.5 Central banks can shape economic growth, affect income distribution, influence a country’s foreign relations, and determine the extent of its democracy. While there is considerable literature on the political economy of central banking in OECD countries, this is the first book-length study focused on central banking in emerging market countries. Surveying the dramatic worldwide trend toward increased central bank independence in the 1990s, the book argues that global forces must be at work. These forces, the book contends, center on the character of international financial intermediation. Going beyond an explanation of central bank independence, Sylvia Maxfield posits a general framework for analyzing the impact of different types of international capital flows on the politics of economic policymaking in developing countries. The book suggests that central bank independence in emerging market countries does not spring from law but rather from politics. As long as politicians value them, central banks will enjoy independence. Central banks are most likely to be independent in developing countries when politicians desire international creditworthiness. Historical analyses of central banks in Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Thailand, and quantitative analyses of a larger sample of developing countries corroborate this investor signaling explanation of broad trends in central bank status. |

Growth Of The Soil $3.29 Knut Hamsun's novel The Growth of the Soil won the Norwegian writer a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. English translator W. W. Worster summed up the novel with these words: "It is the life story of a man in the wilds, the genesis and gradual development of a homestead, the unit of humanity, in the unfilled, uncleared tracts that still remain in the Norwegian Highlands." "It is an epic of earth; the history of a microcosm. Its dominant note is one of patient strength and simplicity; the mainstay of its working is the tacit, stern, yet loving alliance between Nature and the Man who faces her himself, trusting to himself and her for the physical means of life, and the spiritual contentment with life which she must grant if he be worthy." "Modern man faces Nature only by proxy, or as proxy, through others or for others, and the intimacy is lost. In the wilds the contact is direct and immediate; it is the foothold upon earth, the touch of the soil itself, that gives strength." "The story is epic in its magnitude, in its calm, steady progress and unhurrying rhythm, in its vast and intimate humanity. The author looks upon his characters with a great, all-tolerant sympathy, aloof yet kindly, as a god. A more objective work of fiction it would be hard to find–certainly in what used to be called 'the neurasthenic North.'" |
