Greeks – Help!: How you say in greek “crib bumper”? Is it “kalymma koynias”?

It is about babies’ cribs. The whole sentence says “not to use bumpers after the child begins to pull up to standing and can hoist himself over the side of the crib”.

I don’t really think that “kalymma koynias” exactly matches “crib bumper” (but I’m a native English speaker, not a native Greek speaker, so don’t take my word for it).

Bumper is used in the same exact sense as when we talk about car bumpers (the piece of metal where the license plate is in the first picture on the site http://www.lekov.gr/History_VWBus_Car_GR.html is the bumper).

The point of a crib bumper is that in provides protection so that in case the baby tries to stand but ends up falling, he/she doesn’t hit his/her head against the hard crib. Instead he/she hits a soft cushion. Also, it helps to prevent the baby from trying to stick his/her head through the bars (for cribs that have bars on the side).

In my crappy dictionary it has bumper translated as προφυλακτήρας – this seems to match the intention of the crib bumper, i.e. that of “protection”. Maybe try translating crib bumper more like “protective cushion for the inside panels of a crib” in case there’s no exact phrase for this item in Greek.
