Boutique Personalized
If you have an artist put a personal message on a work of art you buy, will this reduce any resale value?
We are buying from a small boutique artist in the US who has offered to personalize the work for us. While this would enhance the personal value for us, we fear that if the artist ever became big and the art went up in value, the personal message could hurt any resale value or even make it unsellable. We’d be grateful for replies from people working in the art world.
I’m just guessing here, though I am a professional artist, that if the artist really did become famous for their artwork, I think a personal message on the art would actually enhance the value. Like an autographed picture, the more famous the person the more valuable it becomes. If the artist never does become famous or well known, I think it would affect resale then. It would be more of a personal item rather then an artwork that someone would want to buy for themselves. If you’re buying from the artist to resell the work in your store (or similar) then I would ask the artist to with-hold any personal messages, but if it’s being done for you, I would definitely appreciate the extra personal touch & that’s valuable in itself.
